Itching to upgrade..

Itching to upgrade...not sure why... Think it's just because I haven't for a few years.

Have an i7 920 @ 3.6 ghz d0 chip... Might be able to get more but temps go plus 85..
6 gig ram.... This is at 1066..if I run it faster 2 gb seem to disappear.

Recently dropped in an nvidia 970.

Is there any other chip I could pop in that might stop me from having to get new board cpu and memory...
 
I'm in a very similar boat and did same thing as you and gotten a 970 gtx card.

Run same overclock 3.6 spec and the looking at the skylake the itch is real but I waiting til next year and wait for skylake-E chips plus pascal comes out then ;)
 
I think there is an issue with my board.... Something to do with how the cpu sits and 'bends' the memory slots... Running them slower seems to keep the 6gb.... Running a Asus p6t board... And an old corsair h50 cooler.
Maybe it needs new paste?
 
Temp are 49 just at windows idle.... @ 3.6
Load up prime 95 and boom..... 81 degrees but stable.
Core voltage is 1.216 v
 
If your upgrading it you might aswell just upgrade the whole lot, first I'd reseat and retim the cooler, see if dust is on the radiator also. Have you checked to see if you are running the latest BIOS?
 
Had a look at the cooling.. The fans on the h50i looked like battling each other.... And one wasn't even on!
Changed them round and 3.8ghz...@ 1.2v gives prime 95 a max temp of 82.....
Will have a play around some more.
