iTouch Software Limitations!

Virgin (really Blueyonder - a much better name!) have changed their Webmail to a google version.

This now doesn't download to more than one PC without a "frig" - you have to put "recent:" in front of the email address, e.g.,

recent:[email protected].

The only trouble is the iTouch characters available for entering email account data do NOT include the colon ":" - they are a limited subset of the ASCI characters - another limitation of the iTouch software!

Very shortsighted of Apple not to include all characters.

Hmmm.

Easy fix, put the colon in a different field, copy it and then paste it where you need it. It's not ideal but it does what you want.

That's a fair point, a colon isn't technically a valid character to be used in an email address.

I use Virgin email (blueyonder address) and I'm not sure what problems you're describing. It has also been updated to use Google Mail; I have mine set up in IMAP on my iPhone and it syncs perfectly with my inbox (push).

I use "POP" and if I download the email to my PC first it never downloads to my ITouch. Virgin "Help (!) says:

How do I download mail to multiple POP email programs?

Important information for customers who download Virgin Media Mail using several email programs or on different computers or devices
To access your messages with multiple POP email programs, use recent mode in every client to make sure that all messages are made available, rather than only to the first client to access new mail. Recent mode fetches the last 30 days of mail, regardless of whether it's been sent to another POP client already.
To enable Recent mode, replace '[email protected]' in the Username field of your POP client settings with 'recent:[email protected]' and ensure that the Leave messages on server option in your POP client is enabled.

But I think I put this in the wrong field as now it won't send!

The latter. It's iPod Touch you cretins!

I've never met anyone who thinks they own an iNano or an iMini, so why an blasted iTouch.

I'm off to check on my iLaptop and iMiniMac.

It is an iPod Touch (1st generation) with updated firmware - I call it "my iTouch" - touching isn't it!

(the pod bit seems irrelevant to me)

Mel

Why don't you just use IMAP? It's a much better solution than POP, especially if you are accessing your messages from more than one device. You have over 7GB of mail storage now with Google so you may as well keep all of your email on the server.

The reason why it doesn't display a : on the keyboard during mail setup is because according to the RFC, colons plus most other special characters cannot be used in email addresses.

If you're going to be a pedant then it's actually an iPod touch.

lol I was gonna have a whinge about the itouch thing but have been thoroughly beaten to it :) !

Try and get IMAP working though, you really wont regret it, I mean no more double notifications from multiple email clients, you read it on one its read on all. And no 524 unread emails when you have to reinstall or wipe a device (I don't know how my sister manages this, but I blame pop).

So with IMAP I rely on the Virgin server as my mail storage rather than downloading the mail to each device? Or how does it work? I have one PC and the iTouch (oops) the iPod Touch which I regularly use and have a copy of the emails on each (sometimes useful).

Advice please

Mel.

Firstly you need to think of the email account as a separate entity to how you access the emails, be it via webmail, imap or pop.

What happens when you fetch emails with pop is dependant on how your email provider is configured (if it: deletes messages when fetched, archives them, marks them as read, or leaves them).

With IMAP anything that you do in one client be it on the ipod or on a pc (outlook) is done to the message on the server itself. This means you wont be deleting emails from both machines or receiving notification that emails have been received from both machines. Unless you leave it and access the account simultaneously from each client. Viewing an email with mean that the email itself on he server will be marked as viewed and thus the other client will see it as viewed and not give you a new message notification as you have already looked at it.

From a users perspective its a lot less hassle to work with.

Hope that helps :)
