It's a good job we don't live in Russia .................

the number of complete goons in this thread trying to equate this with the UK or other western countries (or any 1st world country) is frankly scary...can you please all **** off to russia and come back in a year if you aren't in jail or dead and admit you were wrong and that the UK or anywhere in the west is infinitely better to live in than there in terms of political freedom

just look at the lies and misrepresentation I harvested:

You take the internet far too seriously.

omg, you're so clever...

Yes we have more freedoms than Russia.... but we still don't have freedom of speech, are you being intentionally dense?

freedom of speech is not a binary thing, it has degrees. I'd be impressed if you could find a country that has absolute freedom of speech, except maybe somalia...

I suggest the one who is dense might be yourself if you cannot comprehend that the degree of freedom of speech in the UK is orders of magnitude greater than in russia...

And I also agree we are sliding somewhat in the direction of more/too many unjustifiable restrictions on free speech, but still have a looooong way to go before russia's version is preferable.

The right-wing love to feel persecuted. Some sort of victim complex.

yup. left wing too though. possibly they are even better at it. any extremes are bad

ETA: actually maybe left wing is maybe more 'feel persecuted on someone else's behalf' or 'feel that group 'x' is being persecuted

Personally I think DreadNiK is spot on. I’m sick of hearing this nonsense from people who try to paint an entirely false equivalence between western countries and Russia.

It’s breathtakingly absurd.

This should be obvious but ok.... America has the best version of "freedom of speech" by far.

I actually saw this report on the TV when I was in the states in april, I said to my other half, "hah imagine if that was back home, he would most likely be arrested"

The reporter on the local news station even said, "hes protected by his 1st amendment rights" obviously he got in trouble by the school but that's not the same as being in trouble with the state.

you do know we can vote out govts here in fair elections?

I wouldn't exactly call a vote fair when there's nobody actually worthy of a vote

It's like deciding what to have for dinner, except whatever you pick is 10 years past the use by date

The only difference between here and Russia is we get to choose which party ***** the country

who are those people? (I'm suspect one or two exist but I'd like you to provide your evidence)
Since nobody else answered this...

Count Dankula (Mark Meechan) dragged through the courts for two years, eventually convicted under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, and fined 800 pounds. His crime: teaching his dog to do seig heils for a joke.

Chelsea Russell convicted of the same crime due to having rap lyrics in her Instagram profile, those lyrics containing a racial epiphet.

Vernon Mussington arrested for saying "alright geezer" to someone who turned out to be a transgender woman. In this case, charges were eventually dropped.

We don't have free speech in the UK. Yeah, it's nowhere near as bad as Russia, but it'll only get worse, not better.

Jesus, never heard of this. What a terrible country we have become, where we try to make it a criminal offence and a hate crime if someone calls them the wrong pronoun.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Out of the three cases I mentioned, I think that's the one where I most suspect the defendant actually was being a bit of a *****. I suspect he knew this transgender person identified as female and called them "geezer" as a wind-up. Might be wrong, of course, and either way it shouldn't be a crime.

Correction to my earlier post: he actually was convicted, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.

Yeah, you are absolutely right; everything in the UK and other western and 1st world countries (e.g. the USA and Israel) is absolutely perfect, we shouldn't criticise their Governments and we couldn't possibly improve them in any way at all - after all, they have God to guide them.
