It's down to these three...

Edit, intresting!

HeX, my 480 SOC is quieter then my 6970.
My SOC always goes to 100% fan but that is the same as the 6970 at 40-45%. The 6970 can get up to 50 percent fan which is extremely loud.
The 480 also stays cool for whatever I throw at it. It only heats up in things like GTA4 and Furmark. Also, the 480 runs cooler in heaven

100% fan on the SOC is ridiculously loud, I couldn't stand it past about 60%, and even that was annoying... don't know how you put up with it tbh. You could also feel the heat coming out the case, the air coming from the top was actually heated quite considerably.

Interesting that your 6970 is louder. People always seem to claim that they are a bit noisy under load, but not terrible. I have to admit, the 69XX is the only card of the three I haven't owned/tried for myself.

I know for a fact the 560 is very very quiet. My 560 under occt/furmark puts out the same noise as the 480 SOC at idle (~45% fan). And the air coming from the case is still cool.

hmm, just goes to show how different people have different tolerances.
I've never had a 560 so can't comment on that :(
I was used to my first card, the 5850. Then I got the 6970 and kinda got used to the noise but the 480 SOC is quieter so I am happy.

I normally have music/game sounds on fairly loud so don't notice too much but by computer is literally right next to my ear so it does get irritating at times

I personally would not even consider the 560ti, I don't see any real advantages to it (perhaps other then power draw), the performance is not up with the other two cards.

I'd personally go with one of the Gigabyte 480 cards. I have the SE and have managed to overclock this from 700 core to 790 without any issues and it might even go further. The only real downside to these cards is that they chuck the heat out into the case, so you'll need good airflow through your case. As for the power draw issue, even when on full load my whole PC pulls about 450W according to my voltage meter, which gives me the impression the amount of power these use might be exagerated....

Sorry, but that's rubbish.

Could link others, from other sites, but you get the idea. A stock 560 yeah, the 6970 and 480 SOC area well ahead. The 560 SOC however, is right up there with the 6970 and a stock 480, while being considerably cooler, and quieter.

The 480 SOC is of course still faster, but with the downsides of heat, noise, and power draw.

I wouldn't consider the 560 as it is practically the same price as the 480 SOC and the SOC beats it.
However, if noise and power are important then the 560 is a very good choice

just seen a deal somewhere on the KFA2 GTX 480 OC 1.5gb for 190 quid. with a stonkingly big cooler. Is this a good deal? I'm not sure whether KFA2 is a reputable brand?

KFA are Galaxy, and its a good price, and a good cooler. Better than the Giga cooler imho.

Was reading up on reviews yesterday, draws more or less the same watts as a standard GTX 480, i.e. the SOC uses around 40-50w less power at load.

The review stated the KFA2 GTX480 Anarchy is a lot quieter even than the SOC, also the KFA2 clocks higher.

Personally I can see the temptation of switching etc, but for me I would have to sell my 6950 for around £170 and spend an extra £50 to get the GTX 480 SOC or KFA2 Anarchy.

Waste of money, better off saving up for the next generation of cards - probally septemeber release like usual.

The funny thing is their is no game the GTX 480, 6950, GTX 570, GTX 580 cannot run at a reasonable framerate in my opinion, will definitly last people till Septemeber anyway lol.
