I might be totally wrong and apologise if I am, but is it not a bad idea to have a live motherboard sat atop plastic bubble wrap like that?

Better to put it on the foam it came with, they usually come with some black anti static foam in the bottom of the box.
Depending on the weather putting it on normal plastic could be a bad idea.

*Any chance it's made by Sony? :p
No chance, no drm. If it was sony it would disfigure the board in such a way that only another sony heatsink could be used, and it wouldn't let you remove it to move onto a different board. It would cost a lot, come with lots of bits sony wants you to have and lots of people would get sued in the process.

A question- Does the heatsink feel secure?
Can you stand the board on its end without it bending or snapping? ;)

Apparently a board with a scythe ninja attached can be shaken about without damage, but this is a lot heavier.

yes - it feels secure

It's not very pleasant to fit though.... bit like a Big Typhoon, except it uses thumbscrews as apose to little nuts...
