It's not a question of having built the canopy properly or by someone decent or rubbish, the wall wasn't assessed at all to start off with before construction started. If it was, then the owners should be claiming on the contractor or engineer's PI.
In fact, I'm certain that the canopy didn't fail under the snow load before the wall did, because, if the canopy had failed, part of the canopy would have fallen down first, and therefore reduced the total load on the wall, which would then most likely have stayed up.
