"It's not the colours you go home with that matter..."

Everytime I hear the Olympics I just think of this

I honestly don't care, it's really annoying that it is everywhere.[/QUOTE]

So you're honestly not bothered about your own (small in comparison) country hosting the biggest sporting event in the world? That we get to show the rest of the world our country and what we can do?

It's not the athletes attitude we have to worry about, it's the public. For example, the crowd booing England off at Wembley a couple of years ago at the football. Disgusting. No pride at all.

No I am not. I know the majority of people find it interesting but it would be nice if it didn't fill up my newsfeed everyday.

yay everyone is a winner! life is fair and everyone is equal and we are all entitled to everything and if you ant to be famous its cool just go on x factor and make hit records and be like mega famous.

[this is society today] :(

It's all about colours, and while winning a medal is the ultimate goal for any athlete, just being able to compete on the world stage, for your country, in your countries colours with everyone behind you is an achievement.

The creed of the Olympic movement is “The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.”

It's not meant to be about showboating and conquering so in a lot of ways it really isn't about the colours you go home with.

*Scratching my head*
Think that's pretty much what I said, it's the biggest event that any athlete can hope to compete in.

The 'Colours' refer to representing your country in the colours of the flag, not the colour of the medals.

Are you talking about the Olympics or world history?

Both. In terms of the Olympics recently we've been punching well above our weight and ahead of many more populous countries - Australia do proportionally better in terms of medals given their population but overall I'd say we do pretty well.

In terms of world history we've been one of the pre-eminent countries for centuries with some amazing contributions in art, literature, inventions and so on. Not bad for a little island somewhere to the left of France.

In fairness, there's enough blacks now in London that we should win at least the running.

Whites and Asians and even Chinese people can run just as fast as blacks, it's just not valued in their culture as much so less of them enter the sport. Plus a lot of Chinese people don't have equal access to sports facilities and training and creatine like black people do.

They're trying to draw a comparison between the colours and their product as Arial is known for keeping the colours in clothes bright. It's got nothing to do with winning, it's about marketing their product properly during a high profile event.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just pointing out it's actually part of the official creed, not just something people talk about. I just wanted to add to your comment and didn't want to quote some of the others :p

rubbish at every Olympics. :rolleyes::o

As stated earlier in the last olympics we finished in 4th.

China - population 1,339,724,852
USA - population 313,515,000
Russia - population 143,030,106
UK - population 62,262,000

With the comparitive population pools 4th place is good for me, its always going to be a massive massive struggle to compete with any of those three countries who finished above us.

Seems to be normal for schools to think the same as well these days. They don't even acknowledge gold, silver and bronze at my brother's school anymore. You're an automatic winner for taking part. Congratulations!

Competitions bad, see. Little Jonny might come last and feel sad and get a complex. Everybody wins.

In reality the teachers should be shouting at little Jonny for being a big fat slow porker but hey ho it's the 21st century. Can't do that nowadays.

My daughter's primary school awards 1st, 2nd & 3rd place. The secondary school I am currently at has a Y8 football tournament running with a prize for the winner only. It seems that schools do indeed allow competition.

Yeah, i don't know where people get this idea. Well, i do - the Daily Mail. It's not so much an attitude of 'everyone's a winner', rather that you're never going to get anywhere if you don't even try.

I can confirm schools still do competitions with prizes.
I remember house matches, rugby, cricket, & football. At the end of the year, the house that won went to a theme park :). I wasn't very sporty but my house was, think I ended up with about 3 visits to the park.
I remember when I caught the best guy on the rival house, felt good :).
Oh yeah we also had house debating, house music and house chess. Oh as well as the science challenge which was epic, wish they did that at college :(.

Some do. I wonder how many do negative reinforcement by pointing out that not winning is failing?

Yeah, i don't know where people get this idea. Well, i do - the Daily Mail.

Having worked for an LEA for over six years I can tell you it's not just the Daily Fail brigade. Not entirely black & white though.

ha, Following the last one, I think it's going to be quite embarrassing. I mean Bryan May and London Bus? Please tell me the opening ceremony has more than a crappy singer going for it.

I suppose it will be nice if someone wins some medals.

I wont be watching it though, It bores me to tears.
