I used to love Goldeneye. Rainbow Six. Sensible World of Soccer. I'm 30 now and just got a PC powerful enough to play games having used SFF and HTPC for as long as I can remember.

But I just cannot get the same kicks I used to.

Anyone else feel the same?

What can I try to get out of it!

I dunno, what have you tried?

I get you're coming from though. I sometimes sit and wonder why I even have a gaming PC considering how little time I actually spend playing games.

It comes and goes really.
I spent more time playing BF4 today than I have in the last 3 months and found myself really enjoying it, which is a bit odd for me.
Games like Tomb Raider/Sleeping Dogs got me playing regularly when they were new. Tried any of the above? Might get you back into it.

Yeah, end of Jan.
Maybe pick up Batman: Arkham Asylum or Arkham City on the cheap and see if you like them? Most people do.

I'd still give a shout for Tomb Raider (2013). Not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was great apart from a few too many QTE moments.

This.

I find the same, to some extent. Suspect it's down to very limited gaming time. In my younger days I might spend well in excess of 50+ hours a month on gaming. These days, with work and children etc, it's about 10-12 hours a month on average

Give indie games a go. They feel a lot more like older games, though often with some modern mechanics. I mostly play indies, these days

Playing games when I was a child was magical. The buzz I got when I purchased a new magazine knowing I had a demo disk to try out was unbeatable.

I think those sensations are lost to childhood forever tbh. A big thing about being an adult is you can buy what you want when you want, there's no anticipation and you end up with so much stuff you don't play anything anyway. Humble bundles and steam sales do the same thing psychologically as having a chipped xbox, you have so much you end up playing nothing.

Dark Souls restored my faith in gaming and I play DS2 like everyday.
Edge magazine recently gave it the game of a generation award:

"It is most readily described as an action-RPG but in truth Dark Souls is the everygame. Lordran's corkscrewing sprawl makes the game a peerless adventure, each level layout a puzzle platformer. To melee players, it is the purest sort of fighting game; to magic users, almost a shooter. It has the fixed enemy placement memory test of a scrolling shoot'em up, and the harsh punishment of a roguelike. On top of all that sits an RPG structure that offers staggering flexibility, enough for a dozen different playthroughs, the thrill somehow never fading with familiarity. Little wonder that, after Dark Souls, most other games feel facile. It is, without doubt, the greatest work of gaming's greatest generation to date. Somehow that still doesn't feel like praise enough."

The game that gives me the most amount of pleasure/rage etc etc is Dota 2.

The last game i played before Dota 2 that gave me the same amount of fun was Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory many many years ago.

Just wait until you reach 40 and discover the range of games you play is reduced further. ;)

Hmm.. Went on CS:GO two nights ago at 10. Two hours later, roll in modded Mount&Blade. Four hours later, bed time. Four hours later, work (rekt). :D

In conclusion, it actually is the same for me. Gamer4lyfe.

Same situation as the OP. After a break from gaming due to studies I built a new PC and was very excited about trying all the new games that I have missed in the meantime. Was spending most of my free time gaming in the past but this time I found myself extremely bored of gaming very, very fast! It's partially due to the quality of gaming and the general dumbing down, and also to me just having my priorities in life shifting. Long story short, my £1,500 PC (built from scratch, top of line hardware at the time and peripherals) spent 4-5 months being rarely turned on for any other reason other than music (5.1 speakers) or Youtube. Sold it for ~65% of original value net and quite gaming. Think if I ever get back to gaming it'll have to be via consoles this time. But no regrets at all :), I had a good run and it was loads of fun while it lasted. :)

exactly this. I rarely turn on my PC these days and cant remember the last time I used it to play games but i think its part of getting older!

In my 20's I spent hours and hours playing Ultima Online & CoD1 as they were both new and exciting - it seems all original ideas are dead and all publishers are interested in is remaking the same thing over and over whilst making it easier to play and better to look at. The fun element is gone from gaming now and it just seems about chasing achievements... sad really!

NOOOOOOO!!! Say it isn't so!!!

Sadly, though I fear that you may be right.

I've had my rig around a year now, over 100 games on Steam and elsewhere and while I quite want to play 'a sink your teeth in' lengthy RPG or similar I end up playing 6-8 hour campaign crap like Medal of Honor, just to clear it off my 'To Play' list.

It doesn't really make sense, but it's true!

You could always play those games you used to love and see if it is the games nowadays or just yourselves changing, there are no games that rival Theme Park, C & C and Championship Manager for me so I go back to all of them every now and then.

Whoops. I just realised that I lost track of what the OP was after and wallowed in gaming self-pity... Optimism is what is required here... :p

As above, perhaps take a look at what's available on GOG.com (Good Old Games). I'm sure that while the 'kick' may be more subdued than it used to be there'll still be something out there for you. Explore the Steam catalog, Metacritic, youtube, these forums and elsewhere and I'm sure something will take your interest.

Based on your playing Rainbow Six; from memory there is a SWAT type game (or perhaps two) in development I think - though I think it might be more for multiplayer than single. Otherwise there's obviously a s***-ton of shooters available but none will eclipse the wondrous Goldeneye! A popular recent one was the latest Wolfenstein.
