Its not the same anymore

I know where you're coming from OP.

I've always enjoyed a good FPS, online or single player (typically the latter). The last 3-4 years I've almost exclusively played L4D2 or BF2BC but took the plunge with Wolfenstein: New Order, even though it was single player. Opened up PC gaming to me again in a way that I've been missing in years.

Being a few years older than you (and being a Playstation 1 fan) I didn't have an N64 but having played Goldeneye a bit it did do what it did extremely well. If you like that I'd really recommend Wolfenstein!

After completing that I bought Dishonored in the last Steam sale (should have bought the DLC too :( ) and am really enjoying that, nearly finished but keen to play it again which is something I just haven't wanted to do in years. I know some on here don't rate it but if you like strategic FPS then this may be one for you. I got mine in the Steam sale for a few quid so well worth waiting for the sales (although if you do try it the GOTY edition is the best value at the moment - edited, gamesrocket.com doing Dishonored GOTY for £11.49).

Perhaps giving some different games a try (particularly during sales) is a good way to spark off PC gaming for you again as there are some really great games out there, just takes some time to find them sometimes!

That reminds me, I never gave HL2 a chance so that's on my list (as I have it anyway) so perhaps that's a good shout for another option?

Since the beginning of 2010 my single player gaming has practically dwindled to being non existant, i rarely play a game on my own, nor big budget titles, even though theres the odd few i buy and play through.

My love for gaming alone when i experienced a few new things but in all honesty i prefer the challenge of a game than i do anything else nowadays.

Still doesnt mean i cant enjoy a single player game, and theres a few out there that have me very excited but, yea to me it hasnt been the same for years.

I often get this feeling and I was going to point out how I don't really play much but then I noticed these...

.

I'm only lying to myself, I suppose

Seriously though, I used to play some form of FPS (usually CS or DoD) nearly every waking hour. I even maxed out my paladin on WoW, raided every Sunday etc.
Over the last handful of years I've often found that I'll put a game on and play for a round or two before I get bored and just go back to browsing the web or reading something. At least it's giving me more time to do physical things like running or playing with the Raspberry Pi. (and spending time with the Mrs, must NOT forget her).

I probably play games more now even than when I was a kid. I can pull 40 hours a week, despite having a full-time job of long hours, a wife, two dogs, a house to look after, several electronics projects, lots of studying and books to read, films to watch, places to go, people to see and things to do.

You can't get the same thrill as you've already had it when it was original. For me personally the thrills now are in multiplayer gaming, offline/solo games just feel stale without others to interact with.

Coop is another area that's opened my eyes in recently months.. just not the versus game.

How? That's more than 5 hours a day!

The glorious days of singleplayer seem almost lost on the platform now and I doubt I'll ever get the memories I had from early 2000s with Medal of Honour, RTCW, Half Life, Hidden and Dangerous, early Colin McRae games as well as replaying all Lucas Arts adventures from the 90s. KOTOR games were also brilliant, original game was probably the first that made me so utterly sad with one of its plot twists. I think Mass Effect 3 has come come closest to engrossing me into its story in the last few years.

Could say it's a sad day for me as I've finally bought a PS3 this week so I can get some good single player action in with Last of Us, Uncharted games, Heavy Rain and few others. Just don't know how on earth I'm going to aim with that controller :D

Fallout was the last game that kept me into pc gaming, it's sad I used to feel such a sense of community with my pc gaming but it seems to have faded for me :( :(

One correction, when I was 24 or so I thought Halo on the xbox was good, and the closest thing to Goldeneye. :)

Good point made above about being an adult. I sometimes wonder whether we should spend a year restraining ourselves, and then having everything at Christmas like the good old days. Now that would restore the wonder of Christmas too!!!

As a side note, I think travel and sex also play a big part to realise there are better things in life :)

See, that's something else I noticed. For the last couple of years I've been more excited about spending time with the family and doing the rounds on Christmas. It's not about gifts for me any more :/

I've got so much use out of my gaming PC, but in the last few months I must have played about 2 hours tops. I'm finding myself on my PS4 a lot more.

I used to love Goldeneye. Rainbow Six. Sensible World of Soccer. I'm 30 now and just got a PC powerful enough to play games having used SFF and HTPC for as long as I can remember.

But I just cannot get the same kicks I used to.

Anyone else feel the same?

What can I try to get out of it!

I have been through that phase and considered that it was largely to do with age, which it might well have been to a certain extent.

When I was going through my 'am I growing out of gaming' phase, I was playing (or trying/forcing myself to play) games such as Dragon Age, Mass Effect, CoD campaigns, Crysis 2, Skyrim, Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, Batman, Assassin Creed (woteva), Borderlands, etc. Since all of these games are 'amazing' (they must be cos everyone says so) I concluded that perhaps I am just getting too old for gaming since all of them pretty much bored me to death.

In more recent times, I have had blasts on titles such as Risen 2, Bioshock Infinite, Witcher 2, Alan Wake, Tomb Raider, Dishonored, Wolfenstein New Order, and just last night, completed Killzone on PS4. From my experiences of playing these games I have listed above, I would say that gaming has gotten more immense than it has ever been. The graphical quality in games is now up at the level of the art involved in creating the high quality 'comic' magazines, except that art in video games is not just limited to a flat 2D image, but is of course fully dynamic, immersive, explorable etc. Also the 'story telling' in many modern AAA shooter/action adventure games has really upped the ante, not just in terms of the obvious linear story telling of the main plot, but also in the stories, or rather the 'statements' or caricatures made by the artwork alone in certain games. This effect is particularly clear in the Bioshock games, and also in Dishonored whilst the best example of high grade story telling in a video game that I could think of would be in the Witcher 2 (which allows for multiple story threads resulting in very different experiences within the game world) Combining these best elements of the of the old quality comic strip scene with the enjoyable interaction and/or fast paced/exciting/fun playability of a well designed video game, and I think I could safely conclude that gaming has never been better. I am 38.

Of course, there is certainly a lot of dirge around that is publically rated up their alongside or even superior to the Creme da la Creme of the AAA titles, but you just have to develop your 'dirge radar' in order to avoid them. Think of it along the same lines as learning to listen to all the positive signals that recommend that you watch Game of Thrones, but ignore the equally positive signals that also recommend that you watch some brain dead dirge like Homelands. Knowing how to seperate the wheat from the chaff, without having to first consume the chaff, tis an art in itself.

I get this once or twice a year where I just stop playing games for a few weeks or even a month or two. Then go back to it.

Same here, problem is the new game releases are rubbished compared to what they used to be. No temptation to get back into gaming really.

Playing games when I was a child was magical. The buzz I got when I purchased a new magazine knowing I had a demo disk to try out was unbeatable.

I think those sensations are lost to childhood forever tbh. A big thing about being an adult is you can buy what you want when you want, there's no anticipation and you end up with so much stuff you don't play anything anyway. Humble bundles and steam sales do the same thing psychologically as having a chipped xbox, you have so much you end up playing nothing.

Yeah a lot of the excitement is taken away when it's not a big deal to have any game you want.

mp is gamng.

get mic join up with people have fun

Yup.
Get on MP, get a mic and join a clan. I did this in Jan after things were getting stale and now have over 20 more friends worldwide that are a great laugh to hook up with. Not looked back since and my game time has literally doubled. it really is a different world.
