Footage posted online yesterday shows thousands of spiders "falling from the sky" in the southern Brazilian town of Santo Antônio da Platina.

"Still do not know what causes such behavior," writes the video's uploader. "We are researching and will post the answer to the question here."

Brazilian news portal G1 reports that this footage was captured by 20-year-old web designer Erick Reis as he was leaving a friend's engagement party this past Sunday.

G1 spoke with a local biologist who identified the spider as Anelosimus eximius — a "social spider" species known for its massive colonies and "sheet webs."

We need to hurry up and find a way to move planets.

Excellent.

I've seen spiders fall from the sky before, was the passanger in my friends car when a reddish looking spider fell from the heavens onto the windscreen.. and proceeded to start trying to attack it.

We screamed like a pair of girls.

Crazy day that was.

There's millions of them.

Have a read of some of the stories below..

My association with Brazil and spiders was begun when I read about the Amazonian bird-eating spider, which is the size of a dinner plate. Redmond O'Hanlon's In Trouble Again had a horrifying anecdote of his sleeping in a hammock at night (so as to avoid sleeping on the ground) and being awakened by a loud rustling in the leaves of the tree above him, which caused him to turn on his flashlight and see this, again, bird-eating spider staring down at him. Amazon camping trip cancelled forthwith.

There have been reports of frogs and such like falling from the sky.

This may be a fake, but my general understanding is that what tends to happen is they're picked up by hurricanes etc.... which then carry them a number of miles where they then fall to the ground. Or something like that.

a quick skim of the video makes it look like the colony of spiders just climbed the telegraph pole and made webs on the overhead lines

i still agree with Fenris though
