Even if Lion wasn't so cheap, I would still be upgrading just for this as I'd hope it will handle huge libraries better now.

It's not just for Lion - It's available for SL also as a software update.

Activity monitor doesn't show it as 64 bit for me...

Well thats annoying, it lost loads of tracks... had little !s next to random tracks. I let iTunes organise my files... And it has managed to lose track of them, even though they are in the directories that it created. Hmmm... So instead of manually relinking 48/6000 tracks iTunes has misplaced I'm importing everything in again. Opening iTunes with my music folder in the correct place and iTunes doesn't even see it. What a pain in the arse.
