iTunes all DRM free.

This upgrade stuff is a bit of a joke - you have to upgrade everything that's now available in Itunes plus. So stuff I don't listen to now I have to pay for even if only want to upgrade half my collection.

Also, strangely, Itunes has identified some tracks that I didn't even buy in the first place (was ripped from a CD) as been available to upgrade. So effectively if I upgrade, I pay 20p for a track 'upgrade' I didn't even get from Itunes originally.

Gee, thanks Apple!

It does it by your purchase history of your apple account, not the search of your HD.

I know this because I had forgotten about a song, the first song i'd ever bought on iTunes and this came up saying I could download the updated version. Its not been on my MBP before, thus wouldn't have been in my library (was on my old PM G4 and I didn't copy the library across!)

So I don't see why it did that to you?

What's the bitrate of the new stuff, anyone?

edit: ignore, 256kbps AAC :/

I thought that too - but it was definelty showing tracks I've never purchased from Itunes - maybe it was just a bug - will check it when I'm back home.

I checked earlier, and an album at amazon (drm free) is £2 less than on itunes. In fact, I find that £8 for an album that doesn't have a support/case/artwork is a complete ripoff.

Indeed - I don't know why people don't just buy CDs.
I've never bought music off iTunes etc, with the CD similar price the CD wins every time! For downloads to compete with CDs, they would have to be no more than one third the price of CDs - that's the value of the physical media and no compression to me.

I think the way to go is to never buy through iTunes to be honest. I use an iPod and an iPhone now and I like the iTunes software, but I have never even considered purchasing a track through iTunes. Simply buy the CD, rip and import, so whatever they decide to do with the music in your library, you've got the CD to re-rip.

Convenience :p

Simply open iTunes Store and browse for what you like unlike paying (bus fare/petrol) a visit to the shops and having the inconvenience whether you like the music or not as well as visiting other shops for cheaper prices or unavailability from others. Do all shops allow you to preview all CDs unlike iTunes which offers 30 seconds previews for all music tracks and videos?

CDs may not always be cheaper especially if it's rare and not forgetting to pay postage if you purchase online (depending on shop).

iTunes also lets you back up or burn your purchases onto a "physical media" :p

I think buying CDs from the high street is even more pointless than iTunes... but when cheap CDs are available to buy online I just don't see the attraction of iTunes.

Unfortunately, doing it that way, is illegal :p

Forgot to reply to this, some of the albums on iTunes Store includes a PDF file containing the booklet that's bundled with the CD version.

I only really buy from iTunes when there's a single song I like. If I like two songs or more on an album, then I usually just buy the CD. It makes sense.

cant believe they are making us pay to remove drm from existing purchases, they are just taking the living ****, shove it steve

Ok Ive brought 2 albums via vouchers since having itunes, its only found one album out of the two and has added two songs that I have the cd's for in front of me...... cheeky mother*******.

It is quite likely to find the second album later. Are you absolutely sure you didn't buy the tracks and forget about it? It works from your purchase history (I 'upgraded' from an empty library), not your library so I don't see how it can offer to upgrade things that you haven't bought unless something very odd is going on. I had a couple of tracks I didn't recognise, but my purchase history does show that I bought them (about 4 years ago) and it seems quite plausible that I just can't particularly remember them.

i find it crazy that we are forced into buy ALL songs in the upgrade section ...i have a few of them i wouldnt mind puchasing but if i want 1 i have to buy all .... thats just going to lose customers imo
