iTunes creating duplicates

Hey all

I'm trying to move my brother's iTunes library from our network drive to an external hard drive, but it refuses to play nice. I've tried assorted different ways of adding the music to the new location but whatever I do, iTunes creates duplicates of every song. In every folder for every album, each song is followed by the same song with a 1 after it. So I've got "03 Texas Flood" and "03 Texas Flood 1" and so on in every folder.

I've tried copying the music directly to the hard drive and setting it as the iTunes library, copying the music and selecting "Add folder to library", and selecting "Copy files to iTunes music foler" and then adding the folder to the library when it was still on the network drive.

Can anyone recommend any settings or procedures that would let me copy the music without duplicates?

Thanks

Heh, that'd do it alright but my brother refuses to use anything other than iTunes. I managed to fix it anyway, after a lot of googling I found a script that scanned the iTunes library and got rid of any duplicates.

What about backing up itunes to DVD then transfering?

I am having to move my library to my new PC and will be trying this out hopefully over the weekend.

Can you post a link please :)

Yup, here you go. Site's got loads of other scripts as well, not just stuff for managing dupes.

iTunes has an option called "show duplicates" but it wasn't any use for my problem. It just displayed the entire library since every song was duplicated :D
