iTunes - does anyone else find it a buggy pile of poo?

It's dreadful on Windows, better on OS X but still has two issues which annoyed me

- Lack of file support (should really support FLAC properly)
- Poor/locked down sync options

Don't care about the second thing anymore since I moved to Android

iTunes is an annoying piece of crap on windows and I recon Jobs tells the programmers to make it work (sometimes) and no more. I dont think Apple is interested in giving other OS customers a easy ride.

I had no issues with it under Windows and it's been flawless on OS X as well. It starts with my Mac so it's always running.

Smart Playlists are perhaps one of the best things about it, once you realise what you can do with them, they're very useful.

It's been fine for me in Windows 7, I always used to get rid of the Apple auto updater, and I also never used to install Quicktime which was bundled with it, I thought it was fine for what I used it for, and in my opinion it was much simpler and much nicer to use than Windows Media Player.

It's absolutely brilliant in OSX though, I wouldn't use anything else, it does everything I want and it does it hassle free and quickly, I don't think it's ever slowed or crashed for me in Leopard or Snow Leopard.

my only issues with itunes are that importing of music is a PITA - would be so much easier if you could import all files in a folder as an album, for example, instead of the 12 separate tracks it always seems to do :(

The only other gripe is FLAC.

The biggest benefit for me is that i can use my iphone as a remote to control the music streamed from itunes to my airport expresses situated around my house - thats a very cool feature.

EDIT: Windows user.

Don't like it and don't like the constant updates and especially don't like the way they try to get you to install their other software, often nearly catches me out when I'm not paying attention. Can imagine its fine on osx though

Never had a problem with iTunes. I don't know what the above incompetent noobs are doing to make it break. My iTunes will copy my music into artist/album/songs folders, it will encode at 320kbps mp3s, it gets all album artwork, gets all music on my iPod. Occasionally it will remain the colour it is when not in focus, when it is in focus, but tbh, that is just a colour issue, not an actual problem. Also, i have access to all podcasts.

The only other gripe is FLAC.

Just use Foobar2000. Highlight the files, enqueu them in foobar, then convert to another codec.

Pretty much though, the only people with their audio in FLAC format are Pirates, so i'm not entirely sure why it should be supported.

wow, what a rich set of features. if only other software could do that.

are you trolling or just plain ignorant?

I think I tunes is good it just takes time to work out wIth doing things differently to most players.

Some of the features are good though smart lists genius to name a few.

I like it but still thing overall the old school winamp was the best for it's time:D

Flac is the most irrelevant, esoteric lossless data compression technique. I am struggling to think of one single person in my social sphere who would even know what 'flac' was. Accept, move on, use a different (better) codec.

ah this is much easier. you're just plain trolling. :D

because no one in your "social sphere" knows what it is, it must be useless eh? well thanks for that.

we all know lossless isn't mainstream and i'm not sure it ever will be. but that doesn't change the fact flac is by far the most widely used lossless codec out there. if you don't recognise this, then you are quite simply deluded. :)

The most widely used lossless codec because pirates have made it their codec as it is a free codec.

Lossless is lossless. If you own the music and you want it in lossless then just convert it to WAV or apple lossless or any of the other lossless codecs supported by iTunes.

All i am trying to say is that iTunes not supporting FLAC is not really an iTunes problem for people that own their music and want lossless audio in iTunes.

i actually agree with you over itunes/flac support. it aint ever going to happen so people should get over it. it's something apple have no control over so of course they're not interested. also, major record labels are probably still reluctant to dip their toes in the lossless waters just yet.

but i really have no idea where your flac/pirate ideology is coming from (which is what prompted my reply in the first place). it's been the de facto lossless codec for years. you ask the average person to name a lossless codec and assuming they can think of least 1 (which many won't - i know), you know the first answer is going to be flac.

BTW, i'm no flac fanboy. i use TAK which is far more hardcore. it's closed source, windows only, no hardware support whatsoever and only 3 media players i know of can play it. :D

Can anyone clue me in to why there's two of the same albums up for a particular artist on the itunes store? The only difference appears to be release dates and the label names, one being Wonder and the other Wonder Records, released in May 2005 and September 2005. They have different pricing though. The May release is £9 and the September release is £2.50. Is it a case of they've updated the store and forgot to pull the older album down?
