Ok I'm really trying to get along with iTunes but the thing is just a pile of rubbish. I had a few problems with iTunes so went in the Apple store and had a chat to a guy there who was cool and told me I need to give it time and once I got all my music set up right I'll like it.... Ok cool, so i spent hours sorting out my music deleting odd songs, doing album art and making it look nice.

Now when I click on a tune to play I'm getting a exclamation mark next to it and it asks me if I want to find the song.. AHHHHHHH

Its seems its no longer in the default iTunes folder and have to find it on my external HD where i imported them from, and that's for each song. I'm losing the will to live with it now so anyone got any ideas as I don't want to import and sort out a new library again.

looks like you deleted song from the directory that you told itunes it was in? whys it no longer in your default itunes folder, did you click delete per chance?

Righty :)

iTunes (in the menu bar) > Preferences > Advanced

Is "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" ticked?

If it isn't, then whenever you add a file to iTunes it'll add it to the library but not move the file. If it is then iTunes will copy the file to the iTunes Music folder when you import.

Now, the simplest way to get things working again:

1. Plug in all external HDDs etc. again
2. Open (or restart iTunes if it was open)
3. Are all the songs now playable?
4. If they are, (in the menu bar) click Advanced > Consolidate Library. This'll copy every track that's not in your iTunes Music folder (but in your library) to the iTunes music folder
5. Done

Oh, and deleting a track in the filesystem doesn't make iTunes automatically remove it. However if you move a track iTunes (on Mac OS X) does magically follow it to where you put it :)

Not working

You point the reference on iTunes back to the original file.

Rich

That will take me years as you have to do it track by track

can you not just remove all the music from ** itunes and import all the tracks again. wont take 5 minutes. then once its got them all consolidate as said above....

I'm having a nightmare with Itunes too.

I now understand if I want to listen to music. I can't just select the songs I want. I have to create a playlist with them.

I can manage that part. But what I have also found, that if I want to listen to more than one song in the playlist I have to check them all.

How do I then stop those ones from syncing to my iphone when I connect it? I really want to use Itunes, but its becoming a job, more than entertainment.

I dont see what syncing with your iphone has to do with getting a playlist to play.

Arnt all songs checked by default?

I have my iphone synced to a smart playlist of my top 750 listened to songs, that works really nicely.

When I put the songs in a play list, for me to listen to them they have to be checked. If they are checked, when I connect my phone they will try and sync. I have more music than will fit on my iphone.

Also I don't want my wife's Michael Ball / Buble stuff etc on there.:o

1. Re-tick all songs in your iTunes library.
2. Never touch the ticks ever again.
3. Create a playlist(s) to sync to your iPhone, or alternatively just drag the songs you want on to the iPhone itself, if you have the following 'Manually manage music and videos' option checked:
