iTunes on a NAS?

Can someone please tell me what an iTunes server is for on a NAS?

Im thinking of getting one that annoying doesn't have an iTunes server (readynas duo v 2) but from what I read online it looks as though I can still put all my songs on the NAS and have my pc iTunes access the NAS. Is this possible? And if so what's the advantage of having the server on the NAS?
