Hi all,

Need some advice for a system I want to build. It will just be used for storing iTunes media and running iTunes so that it can be accessed 24/7 from my apple tv and iOS devices. I was just going to order one of the server bundles that overlockers sell, however, it only comes with windows 7 server which I don't think iTunes is 100% compatible with.

So basically I just need the base unit. Since this unit will be running continuously it would be good to have components that use as little power as possible. I was hoping for either a 2 or 3 tb hardrive. Max I'd want to spend is £500.

Any help would be grately appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

theres nothing wrong with using one of the home server machines with windows 7 on it because they are all made from standard PC parts. ive actually been recommending them for some lower end builds because they havent been affected by the HDD price increase.

with that in mind, heres my recommendation:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Home Server GTi Intel Core i5 2300 2.80GHz DDR3 - Server £439.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £26.99
1 x No Hard Drive Upgrade £0.00
1 x System 12 Months Standard Warranty £0.00
1 x No Operating System £0.00
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £74.99
Total : £554.57 (includes shipping : £10.50).

i would have gone for the i3 2100 version to keep things moderatly close to your budget, but that comes with just 1TB storage, whereas this gives you 4TB storage

Thanks you for the suggestion, however, I use a windows machine. I guess the time capsule is for mac os ecosystem only?

Cheers

Get a NAS. Most of them have iTunes server functionality built in. You really don't need to be building a server for storing and/or streaming iTunes music. A NAS will also be more friendly and low power than a dedicated server. Unless you build an atom/zacate based server.

This has iTunes server.

The only thing to take into account with NAS is if they come with drives or not.

I looked into this for a while.

In the end I bought a HP Microserver, chucked Windows home Server 2011 on it and have itunes running all the time on it for things like wifi sync

Total cost wasn't huge. The Microserver worked out at something like £120 after the £100 cashback and WHS cost me something like £40quid. It has 4 drive bays so you can increase storage as your library grows etc

There's a thread about the server here

Depending on your budget the new Synology DS212 with a pair of HD's in raid should see you right. Or the DS211j if your budget is tighter. I have an older DS210j with a pair of 2tb greens in raid and I love it. Smartphone apps, loads of functionality and easy to use. Can lso download and install other apps. Uses hardly any power too, so you can leave it on 24/7 without ahving to remortgage your house for the elctricity bill!
