itunes woes

Can anyone please help me, I'm loosing the will to live. I've copied my music library so it doesn't **** up like last time.

The problem is, when I add the music folder to itunes library, it starts importing them but then it messes everything up. Rather than, for example 1 album with 12 songs in, I get 12 albums of the same name, each with 1 song in. This is then carried over to the ipod.

It means I have to manually correct hundreds of tracks. Why is it doing this ? The folder structure is artist > album. Is there no way that itunes cam simply import them as they are filed, does it have move them around. Can anyone post a pic of their settings and album grid please.

I've lost a whole night doing this over and over again with the same result each time.

Itunes annoys me, id really like to know if there is a way to sync using other software

During the install, is there not a choice to organise your own music, sounds like itunes is messing it around, I assume all your MP3s etc are in one place

They are stored in a folder with a directory structure of artist > album

Let iTunes organise library as well as copy imported file to new location are both unchecked. I just can't understand why it's doing it.

It should be a simple matter of going to File>Add Folder To Library, then pointing that to the main folder containing all of your sub folders.

In the Edit>Preferences>Advanced tab, I have checked Keep Itunes Media Folder Organised and also Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library.

I can't see why iTunes is messing it up for you, as it has always worked perfectly for me doing it this way.

Yeah, as above then the only thing I can think is that you are using downloaded music that has stuffed up tags, hence iTunes picking it up wrong.

Have you tried using some tagging software to sort it first?

It's doing it because I'll bet you it's an album with various artists?

Albums like "Now: That's What I call Music 822" will have multiple artists, so iTunes treats the album as individual tracks. To rectify this, select all the songs in the album, press Option + I, or right click and select "Get info" and check the box "Part of a compliation" to "Yes". Also, when you edit multiple tracks, make sure the album name is the same across the range by typing it in again. Sometimes, music will be added from disc 1, and disc 2 could be imported under a different album name which further balls's it up.

If you've done this, you can also switch to album view instead of artist view.

Firstly, thanks for the replies. Non of my music is downloaded, in fact nothing is. I really don't agree with it so don't do it. Yes it is compilations mainly but also normal album as well especially ones with tracks co written. I realise its a tag issue I just can't understand why it can't believe my already structured folder organisation.

No drama, ill get my music on the ipod over the next few weeks then ditch Itunes. I don't like having to have 2 copies of my music folder anyway.

Are you letting iTunes organise the folder, or do you want it to accept your structure?

You may be best deleting the iTunes library file, setting the preferences on the first boot up of the new library, then importing your music with the option to "let iTunes manage my library".

You know, if you already have it structured, have you tried importing it with the Keep Itunes Media Folder Organised and also Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library unchecked?

Can you show us a screenshot or two...

In any event - you can highlight all tracks in a given album - right click - options - part of a compilation for compilations.

You can often get away just with ensuring they all have the same album name.

I also use albumize from the excellent script site to restore messed up Album name tags.

Careful now - this will renumber tracks based on their order in the main window - so sort by track number first!

Thanks people. I'll grab some ss tommorow. Both those setting are already unchecked diggsy, it still does it, it even moves the files around in the music folder. This caught me out again because I thought I would be clever and add the folders alphabetically and deal with them OS small doses. Unfortunately that won't work either because its broken several albums accross the folder all undetermined different artists. So it looks like ill have to delete them all again.

All this only came about because of a borked update that left itunes telling me,

the ipod named "Phil and Sarahs ipod" is not associated with this copy of itunes, please connect the ipod named "Phil and Sarahs ipod"

It then wanted to delete the contents of the touch.

Turn on hidden files and folders.. then browse the iPod and copy off all the folders (these will be your music etc).

Reformat iPod in iTunes and drag the hidden folders to iTunes (if you've bought things on the iPod, that haven't synced)
