ITV to charge for ITV Player

I didn't actually know ITV had released an iPlayer type thing.

Kind of odd though, given that they've just had a large profit increase from advertising revenue. Surely a lot of that comes from their internet player?

The internet revolution is going through a period of change the free content we are use to having isn't bringing in any revenue for the companies supplying it so they are exploring other avenues. Expect to see a lot of companies trying to introduce fees for services that were previously free advertising revenue just isn't stretching far enough.

I'm not sure if it is the right move for companies in general or ITV in particular but I've always been amazed by the amount of free content on the web and convinced it was unsustainable. It maybe that in future we look back at this golden era of free internet content and wonder how it was ever possible to get so much for so little.

ITV is to launch its much-awaited online micropayments system in January, as the group announced a near doubling of first-half profits and revenues of more than £1bn.

Never used it before until recently to watch the TDF highlights a few times - the first thing that stood out was the awful quality of the stream. Pay for that? Nope.

WHY would anybody pay for such ****?

It depends how it is implemented. They are all going paid with achieves available.

HBO and NBC started last year, BBC to implement paid Iplayer for foreign countries now ish, Itv soon, the rest will follow. Tv on demand is the future and everyone's getting in on the act.

Itv player app looks nice and can even skip the adverts, no decent programs though.

Difference being that it's a choice between a paid service and no service, not a paid service and a free service.

Again it depends how it's implemented. And if it's all paid it'll be.

The same paid service vs no service.
More and more people aren't buying tv licenses. On demand allows them to watch what they want.
