Why do people get so wound up by caravans?

Just saw a repeat of topgear and thought why are people so annoyed I mean we have lorries on the road which are slower than caravans (HGV's 40mph vs 50 for a c'van on single NSL) and then most white vans are meant to do the same speed!

So why do people get soo frustrated?

The other thing is modding, I under stand most of it ie fast better handerling but what the hell is up with lowering so much. I've seen so many cars that are say 10 mm off the ground whats the point? Surely you cant drive fast as you have to dodgy yourself grounding in pot holes and can go over speed bumps, just confuses me so much

Can anyone explain?

Caravans are annoying and slow and get in the way. Vans are driven by people who have no fear and thus we rarely get stuck behind them.

Trucks are annoying as well.

I think part of the argument which came from the top gear show was that they didn’t see the point in taking a caravan to a field where you couldn’t play ball games, shout, have a camp fire or anything that they would class as remotely interesting, and when they asked the locals what they did do, the reply was "fill up the toilet"

Their opinion of it caravanning was that it was completely pointless and therefor meant that everyone stuck behind one had a reason to be annoyed.

Caravans have never bothered me either, some people are completely obsessed with them being on the road though

On the subject of lowering I chose to lower my Anglia 4" all round because it is such a small handling penalty over lowering it just 2" I deemed it looked much better lower. Of course I had to take some special precautions like re-routing the exhaust but I had to make that anyway so it was no extra bother :)

Caravans themselves don't annoy me, what annoys me are the muppets that happily follow them and refuse to overtake despite being given plenty of opportunites and it being safe to do so... :)

It's not as if that was a totally unbiased piece anyway, for example it would have helped if they knew what the hell they were doing in the first place. There are a number of people who do give them a bad name, mostly down to a lack of courtesy on the road (although this goes both ways, remember that in general the speed limits for caravans is 10mph below that of cars so usually it's not the caravanner's fault for going slower) and not being prepared at all, for example not using a stabiliser or extended mirrors.

no, i understand it was biased and the whole piece was created to try and show their opinion on why caravaning was pointless.

I myself have just got back from a holiday in France where we stayed in a static caravan, but that has nothing to do with the fact that we're students and couldnt afford anything better :p so yeh, they weren't my views :)

That brought a smile to my face. :)

Lorrys are not limited in anyway (whilst they are meant to be), they do whatever they like on NSL roads, normally anything between 5 and 60mph. So they don't really get in the way...plus driving a petrol car means lorrys soon disapear.

Caravans are fine, solong as they are on the dualcarigeway/motorway, in the furthest left lane doing 50MAX. The number I see overtaking each other and doing 70+ really is rather disturbing, especially as most of them are badly loaded and the caravan has it's own plans on how to get down the road compared to the car...

On smaller roads I don't like anything that isn't doing 60mph (solong as it's safe), as I get really bored sitting behind someone doing 30mph in a 60limit, and I can't overtake due to a mild corner I can't see round.

As for lowering cars, yes 10mm is thick, hit a pothole and the car hits the road, literaly :D I could never lower a car much, mostly due to the lane to my house having greatbig potholes and greatbig stones all over it. :p

Try driving on the M5, A30 or A303 on a bank holiday weekend, then you will understand why so many people hate them! :)

I drive the A30 aswell as the M5, but luckily come off around Launceston, so don't have to worry about most of the caravans, although when they overtake eachother uphill at 40mph, it is rather irritating...damn holidaymakers should stay where they live instead of clogging up my driving space. :p

Well my last diesel...a 1.9 nonturbo 306 had buggerall grunt...so no, I could never overtake, unless I had like 10clear miles of road. :p

Touché.

I now have a 1.4l petrol French car...but it actually moves...but not as quick as my brother's limited Suzuki SV650 :( I know it's due to completely different weight-to-power ratio, aswell as the way he rides a bike and the way a car is driven (he's a nutter on it! :D )

Hmm My 205 1.8d would give it a run for its money i reckon.
The 306 is weighty, very much so compared to a 205, so mine wins/loses the bestest. :p

Hmm I dragged completely off topic...:D

Not many people get stuck behind me in my white van :D

Quite a few get cut up though :o
