The thing I noticed first about the sound in PGR4 was the Shadow by The Prodigy playing at variable speed post event, then the crackles which are more apparent in multi vehicle events.
I really didn't like the car balance in PGR3 and as a novice user on a friends wheel it either wasn't a good example of early wheel support or I was just struggling with it. Plus how could I forget no bonnet view! The equivalent view on the BSA Goldstar with a wheel is a lot of fun too.

Personally I played PGR2 to absolute DEATH. Every night I'd play MP and i'd be lapping up racing round my Porsche 911
I've not played PGR4 much despite having it, might pick it up and play online again. Although gaining all the cars would be a large pain. Enless everyone raced the same.

I did find the slowing down of the music when it tallied up the points the most obvious.
Once I started running it off the disc, I noticed there was more definition between the music and the sound effects too.
PGR2 was fantastic, both offline and online - has to be my number one played game ever. PGR3 was dire and PGR4 was moderately better than 3. Both far too easy too. It took AGES to get 232 platinums on PGR2, it took about a week to max out 3 and 4 
They ruined online play too - the lobbying system was much better in PGR2.

I picked up the xbox long after it was obsolete mainly for XBMC, I didn't feel PGR2 was much of a departure from MSR so for racers I spent the most time on Forza and Rallisport Challenge 2.
You could play PGR2 on system link over Xlink Kai if you really wanted to.
