I've been wondering about this whole censoring swear words...

We have a lot of very good discussions on this forum. It's a shame to filter 90% of the internet's content because little Tommy doesn't know what a ******* is

why do we need swear words?
people only use swear words often if they don't have big enough vocabulary or are lazy, I'm the latter in real life :D.

it's a family forum, swear words aren't needed and with them banned you get better discussions.

swear words are integrated into modern day culture, people use swear words because it's the modern way of talking, it's not a case of being lazy or ignorant or intellectually challenged, it's the modern way of speaking.

For example

"9/11 was a tragedy"

"9/11 was a NO SWEARING tragedy, omfg, i can't believe this NO SWEARING happened"

helps add emphasis, read the book Trainspotting, expletives are more than just commoner's talk

I find this forum to be one of the best, mainly due to this increasing the quality of english used and the signature rules.

Of course the fact that we have such rich characters comes first :p

Star them out fully by the way.

i just hate it when someone makes a really decent thread and then because the word "arse" is on the page, the link has to be removed.

they are integrated, but it doesn't mean you need them on a family forum and it doesn't mean its a good thing.

you could say it's a colossal tragedy, we do seem to off lost a lot of descriptive words since swearing became common, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, as I swear so much, I still think it's wrong and I wish I could stop.

I know what you mean but the line has to be drawn somewhere and I agree that it's the best place for it to be.

:edit: I don't swear around my family (much) and I still manage to talk to them properly.

I'm far more offended by replacing words, or parts of words, with asterisks than I am with expletives.

It's such a pointless thing to do. If you think a word is so foully offensive that its use must be forbidden, don't use it. If you know that the rules somewhere forbid its use, don't use it. Using it and pretending it's something else is pointless and irritates me no end. You want emphasis without swearing? Use bold or use English more effectively.

Rubbish! I'm University educated, have a perfectly good vocabulary, which includes Latin, and I still swear like a trooper! Truth be told, I make a trooper sound like the next viable papal candidate! :D

Then again, who actually defines what is a 'swear' word is and what isn't?

On the contrary, I believe people have a lack of vocabulary BECAUSE they use swear words :P
