I've finally opened my wallet and saw moths flying out of it after buying my first digital full frame this evening. Arrives in about 2 days time and I'm filled with excitement yet guilt as I've not told the missus! I now have 2 choices;

1) Get rid of my 40D and crop lens for money to the 24-70mm and she'll know none the better as she has not a clue about my kit

Or

2) keep the 40D as my backup, sell the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DG EX Micro lens and pull a rabbit out of my ass before I have enough for a wedding lens (not got a wedding apart from assisting 2 sessions this month till at least Christmas...)

My mind is saying do a 1. Is that sensible?!

The sigma 18-50 is a DC so won't work on full frame anyway so may as well sell or upgrade

It's definitely going, it's the 40D that's on my mind. Be useful to have a backup but it'd be quicker to sell them and get the 24-70L...

Might also sell my kidney too.

5Dii? :)

Congrats on the purchase mate, and personally I wouldn't bother with a 40D backup, I'd sell it and get a 5D as a backup.

You NEED the 24-70 :D Get it done!

I upgraded to a 5dII a few weeks ago, and I used to use a 18-50 f2.8 EX too... I haven't found a replacement for it yet on the 5D. The Canon 24-70 is just too big really, and the Sigma is too expensive for a third party lens..

Congrats :)

If you're cash strapped have a look at the Tamron 28-75mm, these can be had for around £200 second hand. I have to admin that I didn't like the one I had much, but plenty rave about it so I assume mine was duff!

Hmmm... never thought of the 5D as a backup.
Looks like I'll be selling up soon... looking forward to an acid test this coming weekend of assisting.

And yes, a 5Dmk2 :D

:confused::confused:

If you find bench pressing a pack of pencils difficult then I'd agree with you...

I think if you're doing paid work/weddings you can more than justify keeping the 40D as a backup. Although it depends on what kind of ass kicking you're in for.

I know what bus means about it being big and heavy. But I've lugged and used a 70-200 f2.8 thru a wedding. I'm sure my skinny arms and shoulder of wood can handle it...

The 40D can combo with a 85mm as my tele setup but I think investing in the bread and butter 24-70 would be more sensible...

Yeah same here, but it really isn't THAT heavy. If anything I find it easier to shoot with a heavy lens, makes it more stable.

I replaced mine with a sigma 50mm 1.4... Dreamy bokeh.. :cool:

I was looking high and low for one of them...
Settled for a well priced 50mm f1.4 till the next opportunity. As much as I love sigmas, it's hit or miss when I comes to focusing issues.

I seen that on TP, it went lightning quick! :(

I was woooing and ahhhing between the 5Dmkii and even tempted to jump over to the dark side - the 700D bodies were a lot cheaper and better AF. Tried a body when I was in Birmingham and it felt right in my hands too. But the thought of having to change my strobe kit, lenses and all... Plus their fast lenses are more expensive too.

I upgraded from a 40d/17-50 to a 5dII/24-70L and it feels great, unfortunately I still prefer using either UWA lenses or telephoto and I'm not sure if the lens is right for me now. Sold my 40d to fund the upgrade and I thought I would miss it, but the last wedding I used one as a second body and I don't feel so attached to it now, the viewfinder makes a huge difference! :)
