Hi guys,
Well I think I've made a bit of a whoopsie. My aging Inspiron 9400 was finally due an upgrade so I did a little looking around and it seemed like the GX70 gave good bang for your buck at around £900.
Well it arrived today and upon firing up my digital crack that is WoW, I was very disappointed to be struggling to manage 20fps in the major cities on a mix of high/ultra settings. I thought maybe I was being a little optimistic then, and lowered the settings, but even at medium it is still struggling to hit 30fps which is my minimum desirable rate.
Looking at the CPU it is maxing out usage while in game, so it appears the A10 5750m is definitely bottlenecking the R9 M290X. I've checked the switchable graphics and power settings and everything is set to max performance etc. so the 290X should definitely be being used.
So was I being too optimistic in thinking the GX70 was up to the task of WoW? I'm going to download BF3 overnight and try it tomorrow just to see how it gets on, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high!
Any suggestions on what to get instead once the GX70 is almost certainly returned? The laptop itself is nice, good sound, nice display, keyboard, etc, just not enough grunt! Because of that the GT72 appears to be a good choice. Its just a shame that I'll end up spending that much as I was hoping to keep it sub £1k.
