Hi guys,

Well I think I've made a bit of a whoopsie. My aging Inspiron 9400 was finally due an upgrade so I did a little looking around and it seemed like the GX70 gave good bang for your buck at around £900.

Well it arrived today and upon firing up my digital crack that is WoW, I was very disappointed to be struggling to manage 20fps in the major cities on a mix of high/ultra settings. I thought maybe I was being a little optimistic then, and lowered the settings, but even at medium it is still struggling to hit 30fps which is my minimum desirable rate.

Looking at the CPU it is maxing out usage while in game, so it appears the A10 5750m is definitely bottlenecking the R9 M290X. I've checked the switchable graphics and power settings and everything is set to max performance etc. so the 290X should definitely be being used.

So was I being too optimistic in thinking the GX70 was up to the task of WoW? I'm going to download BF3 overnight and try it tomorrow just to see how it gets on, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high!

Any suggestions on what to get instead once the GX70 is almost certainly returned? The laptop itself is nice, good sound, nice display, keyboard, etc, just not enough grunt! Because of that the GT72 appears to be a good choice. Its just a shame that I'll end up spending that much as I was hoping to keep it sub £1k.

Yes I updated the drivers as a matter of course before starting the game. It looks great and is smooth inside buildings and other quiet areas, but outside at Vale and Stormwind the frames drop, grinding down to 13 in Vale :(

Thanks cheesyboy, those benches are pretty damning, I'll start the returns process!

So, what would be a good alternative? I was thinking an 870m machine, has to be
17" screen. What processor should I be aiming for?

Afraid I can't give you any further advice; I know, basically, nothing about laptop technology. I only read that gx60 review because I was interested in the AMD APUs :)

hopefully someone else can help you out

Up and running on the G750JZ and wow, firstly the quality feel of it is really nice. Its silent too compared too the GX70. Super snappy and fast, seems to be noticeably quicker than the GX70 just for installing, switching between apps etc. Also the WiFi performance is much more reliable and maxing out the 100mb which the GX70 never did, in the same position in the house. Impressed so far!

From my experience unless your going for a real budget laptop those AMD mobile CPUs are a bit of a false economy - the Intel ones tend to be pretty strong.

The i7 3610QM in mine is still pretty impressive for most uses.

Wondering if yours had a fault as I have a GX70 and get between 30-35fps on WOW with a mixture of high to ultra settings.

It was getting around that is most areas, but outside at Shrine and in 25man raids it was really dipping to the teens which was just too laggy for me :(

I think the only thing that the Asus is missing that the MSI had is the speakers. They were genuinely good quality on the MSI, whereas the Asus ones in comparison are simply OK.
