Two very cool games to sit back and enjoy, no major thinking needed, just lots of fun ;)

It's impossible to get immersed in HL2, as when you do, you get forced to stop for 30-60 seconds.

I have to say though, it's not a bad game, it's just nowhere near as good as the original, which is still breathtaking.

The original had loading sequences too.

Both are good games, so along as you don't install them expecting something truly spectacular and revolutionary. I think Quake 4 is more action packed and more fun, but I felt Doom 3 was a little more atmospheric and immersive.

If you like games with lots of attention to detail, ambience and atmosphere, you may want to try out Condemned, Stalker or Silent Hill 3.

EDIT: Also play D3 with an X-fi card, paired with a decent pair of headphones (or surround system). Enchances the eeriness immensely!

Yeah but even on a computer that was considered "mediocre" at the time, HL wouldn't pause for as long as HL2 does.

It's annoying, just long enough to break the pace of the game up.

I think this game would really benefit from an EAX capable sound card and a surround system, then you could hear the exact location of the nasties!

If you did not already know, there is infact a patch available for Sound Blaster cards with EAX 3.0 support and later that adds EAX environmental audio effects as well as full 7.1 surround sound to Doom 3. Certainly worth checking out.

I think you misinterpreted his post. He knows the game supports EAX, that's why he's saying it would benefit from an EAX soundcard (I'm assuming he's using onboard sound or similar).

If youre into pure fragging then get Quake 4 and play online, you basically run around maps while constantly holding down the left mouse button trying to get a kill :)

The loading during the game really doesn't bother me. I just got round to completing Half-Life 2 today (my brothers had it since day one, but I didn't complete it for ages due to PC problems with my old PC).

Brilliant game, especially when you think quick and pick up a grenade that's been thrown at you with the mavity gun and lob it back :p

The loading in levels wasn't long enough to break the pace of the game for me.

theres nothing wrong with the loading to be honest, whats the betting you pause it to go to the loo or to grab a drink, thats breaking it up.
So is the autosave feature in D3/Q4(yes i know hl2 has one aswell)
All games are going to have breaks etc inbetween, because they are games, not real life. HL2s loading sequences are not exactly v long, they are easy enough to put up with.

I hope the people who class this as a fault dont sit and play the games for hours on end without resting. That would do yourself a lot of harm, eye-strain, RSI etc. Stiffening muscles etc!

looks like in gonna pick this game up after all ( doom3) i started this post on 5th Jun 2007 and i still havnt got round to buying this game

Get it and ignore the uptight, hard-to-please types around here :p . It's a fun and spooky game, with a brilliantly designed engine that really immerses the player.

Quite right. Its an old school fun shooter with a great atmosphere, design and visuals and it is very immersive. You really should check it out :)

The main issue LOADING with the HL2 (and SiN Episodes: Emergence for that matter) is that you have LOADING very little control on when it gets triggered. Games only Pause when LOADING you LOADING tell them to, not when you run LOADING round a corner.

Far and away the most frustrating thing for me about the HL2 messages is that they can be triggered when you backtrack. For example say you enter a new area, then a fight breaks out or something jumps out and stratles you, so you are backing off, retreating. *BAM* you get hit by another loading screen just 10 seconds after the last because you crossed a boundary. ZZzzZzz.

cant remember any times that happened to me, most of us run forward during fights :) Where abouts did you encounter these points, as im fairly sure the loading points are generally set away from scripted firefights etc. Lets face it, valve aint exactly newbie game designers are they

I loved Doom 3, the expansion pack (Resurrection of Evil) was even better. I still play Quake 4 online regularly....I think it's excellent. They're both better than any of the dull as dishwater WW2 Dad's army tosh that's plagued PC gaming for what seems an eternity. Prey and Riddick are both excellent as well.

My point is, it seems to be the only FPS (bar it's predecessor) that does this. Doom 3 doesn't. Call of Duty 1 or 2 doesn't. And none of the Quakes do either. Sure, they have "end of level" parts, but so does HL2.

I just don't see why the engine has to do this.

I'm just playing through Doom3 on Ultra, it's also the first time I've played it, and I have to say that for a game that has some seriously devastating weaponry the torch is pathetic!

Hell, why can't they do what we do these days and attach the torch to the weapon? After all, it is set in the future and by then you'd expect a torch as standard on mil-spec weaponry, or at least the option to attach one.

even the lucky lucky men on holiday come up with a cunning design for a torch, incorporated into glasses to wear as head accessories!
