I've only gone and done it.....

My TV is used mainly for one thing, my 360. OTher than that the odd film and the odd TV show, top gears back soon and im watching 24 too.

I really wish I could bring myself to dispense with the Sky box. TV I'll watch - I use it for background as much as actually watching it, but I do almost all of that on my PC (every PC in my household has access to Freeview), so the actual physical TV, great though it is, and therefore the Sky box connected to it, very rarely sees service.

But then I keep thinking of the odd few programmes a week I like to watch (Stargate for one, Cricket for another, both of which are on Sky), and then I never actually get time to watch them, so it's money down the drain after all.

Willpower. I have none. :(

Barely watched TV since I started uni. Never had the time. Though we have one in our lounge for the odd 360 session, it's good to know it's there when Top Gear and Planet Earth is on.

That's exactly it. There's some great TV but at the same time there's a great amount of crap TV. It's there if there's something I really want to watch, but I won't watch it out of lack of other things to do :)

At uni, don't have a TV. My younger sister is the only one who watches TV in the house anymore. Guess I got put off it when our old Nokia TV took 15mins to boot up cos it was so old!!!

Couldn't do without one, couldn't play my Xbox360 or watch Top Gear without it.
You can watch Top Gear without a TV. I do. It's freely available on the BBC's website. It's only available while a season is running though.

I don't think I watched any TV at all last year, although I do use it to watch DVDs sometimes. Maybe I should get rid of it and pay for the odd film online instead.

I don't really watch TV at university anyway. I'm usually doing work, out working or in university. Any spare time is usually spent browsing or drinking my loan :p

Anyone else got rid of the TV, was it hard to do and have you missed it?

I stopped watching TV properly about 2 years ago. Only thing I've watched in that time has been 4 episodes of Strictly Dancing and 1 or 2 news programs.

I don't miss it, not even a bit. Most British TV is utter tosh and as I prefer American TV shows I get them through other means like DVD's.

Although my post count on these forums has sky rocketed since I stopped watching TV so I think I've just found a new form of dull entertainment :o

I don't really understand the need to do this. Are you saying that you're addicted to watching TV or something, and that this is your way of breaking the addiction?

I really admire what your doing though.

Why? I don't see what's so admirable about deciding to dispose of the TV.

Most mornings the other half and I just listen to the radio. The TV rarely goes on these days tbh as there's nothing but repeats and reality TV on it :(

At least Talksport/LBC gives a bit of variety. Radio 2 on Sundays is alright as well (I must be getting old)

I have'nt watched TV for years...but I work printing a national newspaper, so I'm still exposed to my fair share of absolute ****.

I have decided that I am going to give up reading the newspapers too, full of propoganda and disinformation, we are like sheep being led to the penns but all think we are going of our own accord.

Richard little John wrote a good article about TV, referring to the book 1984 he advises to "turn it off while you can", I could not agree more.

My TVs are mainly just ornaments. I recently bought a 32" LCD and nice stand for the living room and a 26" LCD for the bedroom.

I'm yet to switch the bedroom one on and the living room one has been on for about an hour in the last month while I had a DVD on in the background while I ate my tea.

Meh, each to their own. My life would be a fair bit less pleasant without my regular dose of sci-fi, movies, documentaries, news and occasional mindless crap. Course you can get all that stuff on the computer monitor so you aren't exactly getting away from it by hiding the TV.

Idly browsing web forums isn't really doing that much more for you than watching a few random programs on TV.

I am surprised with the number of people posting that do not have a telly and thanks for the encouragement. I already felt the benefit by doing without it last night, the kitchen and bathroom are spotless, I am already packed for holiday and I finished the book I have been trying to for months; all before bedtime. :)

I just find that the time I gain by not watching TV is usually consumed by being at the pub or by playing Oblivion

I'll be playing a lot more games over the coming month seeing as Christmas has caned me. Removed my overdraft facility too to stop the temptation

I don't have a TV in my room and I've lived without the use of one before although I'd rather not do it again. I like to know that it's there if I want it :)

I would like to reply NO to that question but after thinking about it, yes, I think I am addicted to TV and this is a way of breaking that reliance. Cold turkey is the only way, like giving up smoking, cutting down doesn't work as inevitably usage creeps up again. :o

Day One - so far so good.

Anyone want to buy a TV and Twin Tuner Freeview PVR? :D

Fair enough. Good luck :)

this is making me think, the only thing i watch is newsnight but i seem to spend hours at weekend looking at crud on sky.

If TV License is £10pcm and sky is £40pcm i could buy a fair few dvd's with that, especially as i prefer older films

That was also a part of my decision making. The cost!

Better still rent the DVDs or even cheaper, borrow them from friends.
