Hi im thinking of getting a new PC whats all ready built with Ivybridge and all parts all ready put together. Say i had a Sandy bridge CPU in the motherboard now and wanted to miss Ivybridge and buy the next CPU after IVYBridge do you think these new CPU will fit the motherboard whats got the Sandy Bridge in. Im asking because like i say im wanting to buy Ivy now and miss the next new CPU and may even the one after and then buy the 3rd gen after Ivy. How long can you upgrade CPU be for you have to buy a complete new PC?.

Thanks hope you understand the questiopn.

Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge are both Socket 1155. Sandy bridge works with all current 1155 motherboards and Ivy Bridge with most, but for the best compatibility get a Z77 motherboard.

The processor that comes after Ivy Bridge is called Haswell and it will NOT work in any Socket 1155 motherboard.

I hope that clears it up, because your question was a bit confusing. You want to buy a PC with Ivy bridge and put a Sandy Bridge in it and then wait until after Haswell to buy a new CPU.. in an old Socket 1155 motherboard? 0_o

Lukewhitworth i no for sure ivy or even sandy will not fit in my mobo now what i have has its a Asrok P43de q6600 775 socket. I just wanted to no how much i could upgrade when i buy a new PC with Ivy.

Ivy Bridge will not fit in your current Socket 775 motherboard. Also, if you get Ivy Bridge you won't be able to get Haswell or any other future CPU.

Ivy bridge is the end of the line of Socket 1155 motherboards.

This is true but unless you upgrade every time a new tick or tock comes out then it's irrelevant. If you bought the new tock, the tick is hardly ever worth upgrading to, better off saving for the next tock. Sandy Bridge introduced the 1155 socket but there are barely any reasons to upgrade from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. Haswell will use a new socket 1150 and if you want to upgrade simply buy the new mobo and CPU.

Skipper - Ivy will be a massive upgrade from a s775 setup - I'm making the jump myself. You'll probably get a couple of years out of it at least before needing to upgrade anyway so you could probably skip Haswell.

Thanks for the advice guys will buy an brand new ivy bridge PC when they come out all ready built in a pc as im no good realy at building my own. At least its is the top of the range stuff of this socket 1150.

If you are buying a pre-built system I would strongly recommend you buy from PC shop like OCUK - as they use off-the shelf parts that are of high quality and packed with features, which allow you to do cool stuff like overclock your CPU and run multiple graphics cards.

If you buy a prebuilt system from one of the massive companies then they use much lower quality parts that don't give you these extra features and aren't very good for upgrading.

OCUK have just released their new pre-overclocked pre-built PCs - they are well worth a look IMHO.
