Jag XF - used

Test drove a V6 3.0d S two days ago and it was sublime so I've been looking to pick one up.

I saw this one on the approved jags but wondered how much might I be able to shave off if I negotiate hard

Anything I should be aware of before I pull the trigger?

I would check if it has the rear parking camera, if not wait for one that has. Also I would get one with a B&W sound system but that's just my preference.

Not sure about discounts, when I was looking several places would not entertain any prices drops at all. They said the cars were competitively prices compared with other dealers and when I checked the book prices they were spot on or a bit under.

No idea how good the extended warranty is on Jags these days, but with any premium car I'd be looking to make sure it's in place for your length of ownership.

An OV plate would often mean it's an ex management fleet vehicle, which will normally mean they're very well looked after at the start of their life.

Edit: Parking camera is a must, as they're a little bit lacking in visibility out the back.

If it was me, I'd wait for an XF Sportbrake S, but it's probably a little pricey still, but I think they look cooler.

in what way?

Looked into buying one recently, and the owner showed me his invoices for work done.

I cant give exact examples, but remember going through them thinking the prices were rediculously high. It's why I didnt go with one in the end.

That's basically the same spec as mine, but hasn't got the parking pack on it. You get the front sensors and camera with the parking pack which are a must have in my view. B&W isn't as important on the facelift cars as the mid spec system is a major improvement over the pre facelift systems, being almost as good as the 440w B&W system. It comes with dab, iPod/USB and Bluetooth steaming as standard.

Servicing is 18k or 12 months and most dealers will sell you a maintenance plan which is worthwhile. Annual extended warranty is approx 1k.

I can get 48-54 mpg on a long run, tax is about 200 a year. 8 speed box is brilliant, active suspension is very good and kit levels are very good.

Was if out of warranty or something? Can't imagine it being any worse than a BMW or Audi dealer price.

You're driving along and you hit a pothole a tad too fast.

Boom the hood airbags have gone off and knocked the bonnet up.

New airbags, new sensors, new bonnet, paint it up and you're looking at an interesting bill.......for hitting a pot hole.

well your insurer is :)

Extortionate maintainance costs.

That's a first. Never heard that before on any of the reviews of the XF. I'll look into it in more detail as tbh one of the reasons I'm going for it is it's supposed to be hassle free. Even the services are pretty cheap (every 15k, £289 plus any repairs/replacements). On a 2012 I can't imagine there'd be anything major to repair within at least 3 years.

tbh it's not great, underwritten by a 3rd party, I am thinking of not bothering next year

Is there no extended manufacturer warranty available? Should I not opt for a third party one?

See, I specifically asked about that and the salesman told me the near camera is not necessary though I explained I'm very much used to it and have had one on my cars for the last 6 years.

Also with regards to the B&W - he also told me that very very few cars come with this option and if I'm set on it then I can pretty much forget about finding one anytime soon. It looks like the only ones I can find with it are portfolio trim and even then, rarely.

Thanks guys very helpful so far.

The camera is not that vital, the front sensors that come with it as a pack are. It's one of the more common options on PL and portfolio spec cars.

The B&W and now Meridian system are standard on the portfolio cars, personally the 600w Jag system or mid level meridian are now more than acceptable. It was a requirement on the preface lift car as it included the Dab and USB/iPod options and was much better than the mid level system. Those options are now standard.

.

not one that Jag administer, they sell this as "official" but it is a 3rd party that runs is, probably better than totally unconnected 3rd party warranties but way short of a proper manufacturers one

Looks very official on the renewal I was just sent?!

Anyway, so far my Jag had been very cheap to maintain?! The XF seems to score very highly on ownership satisfaction reports, and quality tests, so i would suggest it's one of the best purchases in this sector of vehicles. 18 months, not one major issue. I could have only wished for that reliability with my E92 that I had before.

I had my XF for 2 years and the only thing to go wrong was the fuel filler flap stuck shut but got it fixed and that was it and cost £70. It had two years free servicing and free MOTs when I bought it so didnt pay a penny for them.

The only real cost I had to pay out for that car was some scroat putting three key scratches along the length of the car which cost me £800 to repaint. All in all the car hardly cost me anything to run.
