Java Update/Security Reminder

And I'm going to go mental the next time the java control panel icon vanishes or if the update settings are altered (like now as I had checks for updates set to daily and it's been changed to once a week without my consent).

Not sure if this is the right thread but I'm getting constant Java updates on both my work and home PC's!?!?

I'm sure I used to get an update every month or so but I've literally been getting an update every single day for about a fortnight now!?!?

Is there any way to disable this, or at least make it not check so often??

I just get the "juscheck.exe" flashing up in the taskbar!

You may have multiple versions of the latest Java (you could install 4 on your machine at a time if you please)

What I'd do is remove them all in Add/remove programs.

Then download the latest 32bit Java 7, everything 'should' work ok. I don't know of anything that needs Java 6.

Java 7 Update 21 is available - Watch for Behaviour Changes!

Oracle has significantly changed how Java runs with this version. Java now requires code signing, and will pop up brightly coloured dialogue boxes if your code is not signed. They now alert on unsigned, signed-but-expired and self-signed certificates.

We'll even need to click "OK" when we try to download and execute signed and trusted Java.

This is a really positive move on their part - with as many problems as Java has, it'll be nice to stop blaming the developers of the language entirely for malicious code - Java doesn't give you malware, running malware gives you malware.

Google Chrome is your friend. It keeps Java at bay. :)

For even more protection, run it in interactive plug-in mode. Even Firefox has this feature.

No, for protection simply do not install Java.
Vassal needs it, thus I haven't installed vassal, which is a shame.
I haven't encountered anything else recent that needs it.

The browsers have their own javascrip versions, use those, and don't bother with java itself unless you have a specific program that needs it.
If you do list the program here and what it does.
People may know of alternatives.

Minecraft :p.

I only installed the 64 bit version which browsers can't use (unless they're 64-bit too). Apart from this I can't think of anything major that will require java as well.

You can install java if you need to run apps, just permanently disable the plugins in Firefox.

I think by default Firefox is going to start doing this in future anyway.

Aren't these auto updates anyway?

It doesn't have proper automatic update. Java's answer to auto-update is a silly little notification pop-up. I've only ever seen this pop-up on XP machines running as Administrator. It doesn't seem to play nice with UAC.
