No they aren't... They have vans/mini-buses and then large good vehicles below them in the hierarchy (ladder as you call it)

Seem like you are putting an awful lot on motorists there - some of which might be applicable but a lot is down to things like historic issues with how urban areas have grown up before cars even existed and shambolic planning on the part of the relevant authority rather than something the motorist is responsible for.

Even with the **** poor attitude of far too many motorists there are practical realities to a lot of that which aren't reasonable to put on drivers - it would be a mess trying to stop for every person who wanted to cross a road and/or far too many pedestrians try to cross in places where it just isn't safe to stop a car i.e. just after a bend, etc.

I don't entirely disagree - something I see quite a bit - on the way to work today encountered a cyclist and 2/3rds of the vehicles behind and in front of me simply brushed past moving over the bare minimum needed to clear the cyclist - I think I was the only one in the immediate row of vehicles who went out into the other side of the road to pass them.

Hard to tell sometimes - I encounter a few people who are fully locked into that kind of mindset who seem to seriously think cars should be doing 15MPH everywhere, etc.

If this has got worse, it’s another reason I’m glad to have left London as situational awareness amongst pedestrians was almost non-existent 5 years ago with iPhone Zombies being the most numerous candidates for Darwination By Vehicle.
 
I live in a smallish town and haven't noticed this.
I have come across the opposite where i need to turn so wait for the pedestrian to cross but they are still waiting for me to turn. Cue a bit of a standoff as either of us is unsure whether they other is going to go.

100% agree. My local city centre is pedestrian only on weekends, and the amount of karen's whining about traffic because they have decided their commute MUST be through the centre of town is embarrasing.
 
I’ve actually knocked someone over before, one of those I’m hard so I’m going to walk across the road with my mates very slowly. Hopefully it’s a lesson he won’t forget because he realised a ton of car is much harder than he was, 2 and half ton of van much harder again.

Sounds like you were the problem if you couldn't stop. Unless you were trying to be a big man and proving a point?
 
Saw someone get smashed into by an e-scooter at the weekend as a result of jaywalking/walking across a road where cars are going. Person nips into the road to cross and forces a car to stop, e-scooter on the cars inside just flies right into the person.

Can't stand e-scooters anyway but equally felt a bit rough for this kid who had no chance of stopping.

They were waiting for me at my house, handcuffed me through the window and took me down the station. The chap didn’t press charges.

You teach your children stop, look and listen from an early age yet society tell them when they are older it’s ok to just walk in the road without doing any of that because ultimately the blame will lie elsewhere.

"Jaywalking" is an American term only - they're not allowed to cross the road wherever they want (can only cross at actual pedestrian crossings/crosswalks etc), and the term for crossing where they shouldn't is "jaywalking".There's no such thing in the UK, as we can cross anywhere within reason (and to the restriction of a couple of rules).

The amount of plantpots walking in front of cars, however, is certainly a growing concern...
