Are these things any good?

Seem cheap at £50.

Would be for a bedroom TV, just not got much room for anything bigger.

Thanks.

What will you be using to power them?

I have had a pair of these since the lates 90's and apart from having to replace the foam surrounds have been a great pair of speakers (used in several different roles). They are currently on my wifes desk with her PC powered from a Boston Acoustics 2.1 'system' with a modified sub.

Depending on your listening preferences you may need a sub with these.

What will you be using to power them?

Denon AVRX250BT.

Personally, I detest soundbars.

Will also need to use headphones but have no desire to use Bluetooth so will be running a simple cable from AV amp to the bed :D

I know a Soundbar would be "easier" but I find in terms of "bang for buck", they are not that great and I could always upgrade the JBLs in the future.

I assume the Control Ones would be better than most TV speakers, even without a Sub?

/\/\/\/\ I would have to say yes even though I've not heard them myself. The reason why is Richer Sounds have stocked these speakers on & off for Donkeys years & they must sell them by the container load due to the price. Most tellies in my opinion have 'pancake' speakers so those speakers with Denon amplification has got to be an improvement.

I own a few pairs (also from the late 90's) and agree with what @brakeinup says. They are very good and will easily outperform any built in speakers. They don't dig deep with little ability below ~80Hz which is why they pair well with a sub. They are capable of going very loud with clean input and north of the 80Hz cliff, their performance is very flat.

The foam surrounds tend to last around 10-15 years before they start to crumble. The cabinets are plastic resin with rubber bumpers as they are designed for professional use so they can take abuse without much trouble. About the only thing I don't like about them is the snap lock speaker cable terminals.

Anything else recommended for around the £100 mark or are the JBL's hard to beat?

They are only for Nippas bedroom, he is not an audiophile as far as I know :p He does like films and will mostly be using headphones from the AMP but I just wanted something better than the **** pot TV speakers.

They are only for Nippas bedroom,

There are a few Hi-Fi loudspeakers under £100/pr, but the JBLs are designed for the rough and tumble of AV hire, and I can't think of a more suitable application for a young child's bedroom where there might be a temptation to poke in the tweeters of less well-protected speakers. In short, the JBLs will live to see the nippa hit their teenage years whereas more delicate products might have hit the dustbin years earlier.

Get the JBLs.

LOL

The Control Ones are now £99 :D Glad I got mine for £50.. seemed a bargain.

@lucid - Sounds spot on :D

@hyperseven , they look VERY nice for the price BUT, are rathr deep and rear ported and these need to go right against the wall, either side of the TV with not much to spare as it is as in an alcove.

Had a full AV set up of JBL Control 1 back in the 90's.

They had a protection circuit built in too, sure someone tried drop kicking one of mine with no issues. Pretty bomb proof, average sound quality, no bottom end.

Quite liked them as a robust tool type speaker.

Got Control 1's setup and honestly, they are perfect for the need.

TV and music is great.

They punch WAAAY above the £50 price point I paid. The fact they come with wall mounts too is a nice bonus.

Very happy.
