jeremy clarkson v the mail and mirror

If it's a non-story why has Clarkson felt the need to issue an apology?

Just to clarify, he hasn't issued an apology for using a N word, he has issued a video rebuttal, and apologised to people offended by the papers lies about him.

Assuming you didn't watch it but not only has he denied using the word and given an explanation of events but he has even read out the email he sent at the time notifying the producers that on one of the takes the word he mumbles instead sounds somewhat like the word he was trying to avoid using and so they are forbidden to use that take in the show that airs.

Are we now going to burn Elvis Costello records / CD's / delete MP3's? Olivers Army lyrics anyone.............

As has been said in many posts already, a non story drummed up to sella few papers and keep their Clarkson Bashing Brain Part happy for another 6 months.

Because he want's to keep his job. He hasn't got the reputation for exactly being PC has he and it's quite clear he has made 1 if not 2 deliberate racist comments. Now if that's the way he wants to act in his personal time it's his business but when he does it in front of others or representing the BBC it comes into the public domain. I like the show I like the bloke but he simply can't do this other people have gone for less.

Use your brain, if you were a racist and wanted to keep your job why would you say the N word in front of a crew of probably multi-ethnicity being filmed by a camera for broadcast on the TV?????

I know I've said things by accident (nothing racist) while trying not to say them, the more you think about it the more likely you are to have a brain fart and say it.

And as one of the main owners of the production company why would you not have the evidence destroyed to boot.

The whole thing is just a load of nonsense to sell a few papers :(

Why do celebrities always act like this?

1) DENY everything and accuse your accusers of slander
2) (after video or other hard evidence emerges) CLAIM that's not what you said, meant or that it's taken our of context entirely, or it wasn't really you, you were drunk, high or whatever
3) APOLOGISE for offense which might have been cause by the misunderstanding (still maintaining you didn't say/do it)
4) APOLOGISE AGAIN FOR SAYING IT (finally coming out with the truth)

Is it some kind of system they follow to bide their time until things blow over because they know the public has a limited attention span and as long as they can deny it for 10 days then no one really cares?

There's plenty of furore in the Guardian about it as well, claiming that he's begging for forgiveness, which doesn't seem to tally with what Clarkson has actually said.

Just another case of the left wing white 'determined to be offended for everyone else' brigade still self-flagellating over our colonial past. Awful, awful journalism shown at its very worst. And the newspapers have the cheek to be shocked that the general public are not overly concerned that the gutter ethics of the mainstream media are going to be legally curtailed.

What the hell is wrong with white people, who comes up with poems like that? Why would you teach children this? Appreciate it was a while ago but still, it's wierd.

Yeah, I'm sure no other races have racist songs or terms in their cultural history. The difference is that we white people highlight and challenge them such as we are doing now.

I feel like this is going to blow up and the BBC will be 'forced' to sack him. I hope that doesn't happen as I love Top Gear, it's one of the few programs worth watching in Britain.

Although I'm sure a different channel would love an opportunity to snap up a brand new program, 'Top Geer' for example.

Wossy came under huge fire for his massive tax payers salary, BBC caved in, he moved to ITV and probably earns more than ever.

BBC only needs license payers because there are no adverts. I seriously wonder how TV is going to work going forwards what with digital recorders and people watching less and less live TV everyone skips through adverts.

I think in my life time TV will stop being a well used thing and it will all be online viewing funded by a subscription. The only thing stopping that is original programming but Netflix, Amazon etc are already starting to produce some great new TV only for the internet. 10 - 20 years all 'TV' will be online with no advertising at all I reckon, maybe product placement.

I'm sure the 4 people who are genuinely offended by a very vague video that was never meant for general public consumption will end up getting their way. They will then carry on their way looking for something else to be offended about, whilst making sure everyone knows just how offended they are.

'Slope' is not an insult in the UK. It's absurd that he's being pulled up over something which is viewed as insulting in another country. I don't even care if said the (cue evil music) 'N word'. Listen to some hip hop or rap music, they say it all the time. It's a word, nothing more.

I also think considering '****' an insult is bizarre. Pakistan means Land (Stan) of the Pure (****). It's like someone trying to insult me by saying 'BRITISH!'. Yeah, I -am- British!

Context is everything.

Yes but everyone loves to be offended nowadays to get that victim status and hopefully a bit of compo.

I worked for a Chinese company with a lot of Chinese nationals, a very common word they use sounds a lot like the N-word. Being too-British and polite to ask what it would mean in English, I'm awaiting the day that there is a campaign to stop the Chinese speaking mandarin.

The video is that vague the papers have gone to the lengths of employing forensic audio experts who have come the the conclusion that he could have said what they are saying he said.....

Maybe.

I for one am offended that there is a possibility that Clarkson said what he said and there is actual proof he might have said it.

So offended.

I've heard Chinese businessmen use this too, it's pronounced "Nee-Ga" or something similar, the funniest thing is they told me it's one of their common mid sentence filler type words hence why it gets used quite a lot :P

I actually do use my brain which is why I don't say racist stuff it's quite simple. Ironic you tell me to use your brain and then tell us in the next paragraph that you don't have power of what comes out of your own mouth. How about engaging your brain and thinking about what you actually say.

I don't care about the rhyme. The N word is used extensively in music these days and it wasn't aimed as a racial slur.

The slope comment was far more naughty if meant the way it was.

I can't say either makes me care though.
