Jerry Springer dies aged 79

When I was 9-13 me and the family used to tuck into some juicy episodes of Jerry Springer. Helped that I thought it was all real at the time or course, just like WWF at the time it was disappointing to discover I was watching make believe

RIP.

I liked that he always listened to other people's opinions and had an open mind even when confronted with very hateful views on his shows. He chose to humanise instead of objectify the 'other', no doubt because he saw up close the result of othering people.

RIP

In a month, lost 5 of the celebs which had interesting lives, Paul O'Grady, Barry Humphries, Len Goodman, Harry Belafonte and now Jerry.

How many more?

At uni, when the Jerry Springer show was big, we had a university lecturer who was called Jerry (well was spelt Gerry) and he was brilliant and a wicked sense of humour. We used to chant Gerry Gerry Gerry in that style when he came into the lecture theatre.

Typical student behaviour

His show predated the "reality TV" explosion of the 00s but he made a big contribution to the production of low brow TV. He set the blueprint for airing your dirty laundry in public, which was studied, refined, and integrated in the later social media years.

Geraldo riviera's show was much the same, and possibly before Jerry springer.

Geraldo had his nose broken on air during a brawl between some nazi idiots and angry black guys. Enjoy seeing the master at work:

Legendary show. People can scoff it all the want but back in the day it was great entertainment.

Also makes me realise how old were all getting. I'm nearly 40 ffs!

Too soon?
