Hi all

Looking at a few weeks on garden leave so thinking about doing the above(been high on my to do list for a while) it would be me and quite spiritual uncle who's early 70's but pretty fit

Mrs not keen but happy for me to do it

Planning on popping to the local Thomas Cook and getting some costs/dates

Would you book a tour of the sights over here or when you get there? Would want to get to the bulk of the religious sites

Thanks for any advice in advance

I did a city break to Tel Aviv and went for a trip to Jerusalem. Was a nice novelty for about 30 mins.

You can walk around the fortifications to get a look at the old city, and walk through the various quarters. If you've ever been to a market before, it's not much more interesting than that.

wailing wall is easily accessible, again if not deeply religious it's not that interesting.

You can only visit or even get close to the Dome of the rock on certain days, so you need to know those in advance if that is something that interests you.

Wasn't my scene. All seemed a bit tense and boring compared the more relaxed and liberal vibe of Tel Aviv. I also preferred Jaffa/Yafo for walking around cobbled streets and stone buildings.

Don't let me be a downer though.

Given how mad it is over there, spend a day just wandering about then get across to Tel Aviv and take the train up to Acre, that's a far more interesting city to wander about.

It's worth going up the Mount of Olives to see the view of Jerusalem from across the valley, you can get a bus or walk it no problem. There's also a 'second site' of Jesus' tomb that's considered more likely than the Holy Sepulchre by protestants that is in a nice garden but I've forgotten what it's called, only short distance away.
Otherwise the Muslim quarter market is pretty good to walk around.
Usual sites are all worth seeing but you'll 'do' the city of Jerusalem in a day or two. Maybe a trip into Palestine to see Bethlehem is worth it to say you've been but apart from the church with the birthplace of Jesus there's not a lot to see.

Thanks all

Price seems to be the issue now

Went to local travel agent and was quoted £1850 each for return flights from Leeds and 4 nights b and b over there not including transfer

Any tips on more cost effective ways of doing this?

One thing to remember if you are "well travelled" and have any visits to other Middle eastern countries in your passport (Saudi, UAE, Iraq, Syria, Dubai etc) you will get questioned, heavily, on arrival with the potential to be told "no, go away" which is very rare but it can happen.
