Hi all,

I am looking for some advice on IT work. The the reason is that the company i have worked for as a IT Technician for 7 years has just gone into Administration the other week so i have started to look around for a new Job but cannot find much in my area within the IT Sector and not sure if to try something new.

Any Idea??

Many Thanks
chris

Expand your search area or consider waiting.... just before Christmas isn't the busiest period. I know we have a job opening in my company, but they aren't even bothering to advertise it until January.

Very good point, no one really wants to be doing interviews and trying to get an employee settled in at this time of year.

I dont expect a job this side of christmas LOL. I mean after christmas i will be looking more into. I would have to stay in Leicester but i do drive and have my own car so travel into the east mids would not be a problem

I know exactly what you are going through, I was made redundant about 3 weeks ago, along with the rest of my department.

I'm not sure it's necessarily the best thing for your career without knowing your personal circumstances, but I decided to turn this event into a golden opportunity to go contracting. I had 7 years experience in testing software and gave it a go. It took me 12 days to find a job (in Nottinghamshire).

Now I'm on much more than I was in my old job, and am employed to May.

I'd seriously consider it, as now you have been made redundant your availability is very quick, not something you'd have from a permie job. Drop me a line if you have any specific questions about it (email in trust).

Your OP mentioned you couldn't find a job - I pointed out that you won't find one before Christmas, then you say "But I wasn't expecting one before Christmas". I don't understand - why post at all?!

He's looking ahead, makes perfect sense really...

He said he couldn't find anything local.

I pointed out that he probably wouldn't, before Christmas.

He said he didn't expect anything before Christmas.

It's just the logic of it that puzzles me - if he is aware that finding a job before Christmas is unlikely, why post mentioning that you can't find anything??

I found that there were less jobs, but also less competition. Just hit the big job IT websites (I used jobserve, cwjobs and jobsite) hold your nerve regarding salary and good luck. There are jobs out there.

Mate ... give it up. He made a fair point, that the less pedantic among us are more than happy to accept. Whats with everyone trying to be 'Mr Right'.

Back to topic ... job market is always slow at christmas. Just don't worry about it too much, use the time to have a good holiday and get your CV as good as you possibly can. Market always picks up in Jan.

Best of luck :)

As soon as i found out from the company i work for at the minute about the Administration i started on my CV a few weeks back which is now done and has been checked by a HR Friend and looks very good.

I started to look from last week for work as we have not been told if our jobs will be safe or how long we will have them for. I could not have a job in a few days time or i could still have my jon in 6 months time we just dont know what will happen at the minute and take each day as they come. I thought it would be best to start looking just incase the worst happens and its best to be ready.

I have singed up to the Job websites you have gave me allready and applied for a few.

Thanks
Chris

Jesus, I'm not being pedantic! I was trying to help by pointing out that the job market is traditionally quiet at this time of year, which I assumed the OP didn't know, considering he commented that "he couldn't find a job just now", only to be greeted with a "I knew that" kinda reply.

I'll leave you to it.
