Job Application: 'Sexual Orientation'

That's comforting, i was under the impression everyone would see it but they had to "ignore" it.

Do you reckon most other places operate as you do? e.g. the manager doesnt see those details?
My employer (a big one - ~17,000 employees) doesn't operate that way. All the "equal" "opportunities" data remains with the application at all times.

However, it is generally ignored, as far as I can tell from my limited experience with that side of things.

There's usually a "Prefer not to disclose" box if you're really high-strung about it.

Also, did the form really say: Gay man | lesbian.

Surely they'd just put homosexual like they did heterosexual? After all they didn't put straight man, straight woman did they? :)
Yes they really did put 'Gay man' in there, and 'Lesbian' and Bi-Sexual' :p

There wasn't any 'prefer not to disclose' option either.

Telling them I'm White, male and don't have a disability is one thing, but telling them I'm hetrosexual as well would just ensure my application goes straight in the bin. ;)

Did you read the thread at all? It's nothing to do with quotas.
I did indeed, however a few people on the internet giving their opinions doesn't provide a definitive statement for all companies out there does it. Admitadly my comment was rather sweeping too.

The reason this sort of thing really gets my back up is that I have first hand seen an application automatically go through to "interview" stage because the applicant was of Asian origin. Infact I was disgusted at the person when their eyes lit up "ooh an asian applicant, they'll be getting an interview. Thats one box ticked."

Like it or not sometimes there are "boxes to tick" whether it be jobs or training opportunities that peope are applying for and positive descrimination does happen.

Well I've just finished working in the public sector for a year and saw absolutely no evidence of this.

I never said it happens everywhere just that I know of cases where it does.

Also I stress again my first post was somewhat tongue in cheek. I've never met a "Muslim lesbian loving bi-sexual hermaphroditic pre-op transsexual from outer Mongolia" and I doubt anyone else has too.

It is not unknown for percentage of application forms passed to management for review may contain more than an average number of forms that were completed by persons filling out the sexual/ethnicity forms showing them to be from a "minority".

I also know of couloureds/migrants who are discriminated against because of their origins.
