Job as a car sales person...anyone do this as a career?

My dad's been in car sales for 30 years or so and is finding it pretty tough nowadays.

He's always worked for main dealers and 10 years ago he could easily bring home £3500-£4000 a month plus all sorts of incentives thrown at him for meeting targets like holidays, electricals, gift vouchers etc. Nowadays he's selling just as many cars but is very lucky to bring home £2000/month..last month he earned £1300 and he's their top salesman!! There's also none of those extra incentives any more.

Half of the problem is that a large percentage of their commission is based on added extras such as GAP insurance and paint protection; it's tough enough to get people to hand over their hard-earned to buy the car itself, let alone pay for the extras as well.

He still enjoys the job but says it's only worth considering as a career move if you're in a position to survive on the basic wage, as you may find yourself struggling to meet unrealistic targets.
