It seems like a job for life is an antiquated concept in modern employment.
My Grandad worked for 40 years at the same company, which seemed the norm back then.
I did 4 years in my first job and moved just over 6 months ago.
I'll probably be here for another few years before moving on again, really can't imagine staying in one job until I retire.

How many people have you been employed by in your career and could you see yourself staying in your current job until retirement?

Loads, I'm like a well kept car that has had many owners.

There's only one or two employers that I would have liked to stay with, one was seasonal and the project I was working for on the other collapsed ('twas a charidee).

Will change my career again later in the year, looking forward to that - should be more interesting.

I've only been working for just over four years and have had three different jobs. I've been at my current place for around 18 months, but if I don't see myself moving up then I'll be shipping out in 6 months.

Been with my current employer all my professional career and don't see that changing any time soon.

job for life is a funamental part of the modern approach to japanese hr principles - where innovation and efficiency are excellent.

british hr initiatives are set up to ultimately to either create various conflicts between management layers and subordinates or poor performance.

the dichotamy is even more emphasised as we are trying to take japanese procedures - whithout realising we need to blueprint the whole array of features.

plus we have moved from notions of jobs to the idea of a career

there are roots in history too given the decline in collectivism.

ultimately it is hardly surprising

i think people would not rule out staying in one company for life - but not in the same job; there is a distinct difference. we are all subscribing to this life long learning mumbo jumbo

If you're going to try shoehorning as many buzzwords and unnecessary long words into a post in an attempt to show off good vocabulary I'd try to spell them correctly :D

I've been at my work for 9 years and will probably be here for the rest of my working life unless the department ever closes (Physics & Astronomy). Not that I particularly like my job just that it seems like a more secure job when a lot of places are outsourcing IT support to India etc.

they are only buzxzwords to you my friend they have a use and significance to me - the spelling is poor because this is the be all and end all to be honest. save the critical assessment and argue on the content - sorry officer! you seem to understand the words which is what is required so jog on son.

ive had several jobs since leaving 6th form, longest was 20 months.

Ive been at my current job now (notice job and not career) for nearly a year and ive been promoted once and there should be another coming up shortly.

Im fed up with working 12 hours shifts and only getting a 20 min break all day/night.

Im 25, not sure what i really want to do but i know once i find it i will be doing it for life.

Just wondering, is any of that supposed to make sense? ;)

yeah although it was written in a mild state of anger and whilst i was on the phone. lets push things forward son - i thought Gilly does not like topics to get off topic so why are you doing it yourself. if you don't understand the concepts or terms i mentioned in the first post or even have anything to contribute i suggest you avoid trying to use your obvious clout to put me down - i think it just does the reverse. this is a topic i am interested in and know a lot about - no words i used were simply there for show since i have no interest in showing off to forum members (since i have no real identity on this forum) - i simply use it to discuss, share knowedge or gain it.

I've hoored myself around a variety of companies in the last 10 years, I've enjoyed it but I'm hoping my next company is my last, mainly because I should be working a 5 month year.

I hate my job... but would stay somewhere if I felt it was right... I have just finished my masters and I'm now looking for a new job... somewhere that would appriciate me!

but would you stay somewhere that felt right if the progression was limited? i assume that your aspirations will dictate. although company culture is very important.

the contradiction seems to be that the big companies that appear to offer the most opportunities are the ones that appreciate you less!

however, with a masters i am sure you will move about a lot in the future, continuously moving onto the next layer and expanding your skills set

what masters did you do? What do you intend on doing with it?

& one that they are desperately trying to get away from to be more competative..

anyhoo..

last 16 years I've been with 5 different companies, current one for the last 8 years but have had a number of different positions in this company based in different countries which stops me getting bored. I'm very lucky that my wife doesn't mind moving about (currently planning the move to country number 5 shortly :) )

In the 21 years since I left school I have worked for 3 different employers.
First one was for 8 years until the got bought out and I was made redundant, but walked into another printing job.
2nd one lasted me just under 2 years before the company that bought out my first employer (BPI) went and bought this one out as well and I got made redundant again.
Was out of work for just over 3 months before I got my current job.
Have been promoted 3 times since I have been there and now work regular nights------------------Luvverly (not) but I run the whole facility on a nightly basis.

Could be worse.
