Job Interview, what would you do?

maybe they're a company that doesn't do telephone interviews. If I was an employer, I would prefer face to face than over the phone I suppose.

I just wished there was a way I could go to it :( but I suppose there isn't as I can't get time off so I'll need to stop going on about it.

They're incompetent, egotistical idiots if they think that a normal person with life commitments can drop everything at the last minute to placate them.

If they won't be flexible now, will they ever be?

I agree with this.
Also, if you explain your circumstances and they don't bend any then I think it's fairly safe to assume that you aren't at the top of their list of candidates.

They need to be reasonable, they cannot expect you to drop everything and run.... but in imo the personal Emergency one is the best option

need to make my mind up - thinking about just telling my boss that I need it off as I have an appointment that I've been waiting ages for. Aaaargh, don't know...

What's to stop your boss turning around and telling you you've had ages in advance to book the time off? It'll only make you look bad.

If they really wanted to interview you they would be flexible with the dates and times to help accomodate you. I'd ring up tell them you can't possibly make it due to work commitments but you would be happy to arrange an alternate time, if they don't want to arrange another time then they clearly didn't really want you. I certainly wouldn't let a prospective emplyee that I was interested in hiring pass by just because I couldn't find time.

I would just state that I had a personal issue to sort out and I HAD to have the day off. Check your company handbook, most companies allow compassionate leave for personal reasons.

I rang the company up and told them that I couldn't make it and they sounded really sympathetic and said that they would have a word with the boss to see if they could arrange a more suitable time but I doubt this will happen :(

Thanks for all the advice :)

No serious employer gives you half a day notice for an interview!!!!

I would normally agree but this exact same thing happened to me last thursday, I had an email @ approx 11am asking for an interview @ 12pm the following day.

Needless to say I said no I can't possibly do that a) its in the middle of the day and b) a days notice is not enough.

You can't be expected to make an appointment with that kind of notice.

How long will you be off work for the interview? I'd go to work, go to the interview (tell people you have a private appointment), go back to work and stay late.

The OP already stated it was in a different city not easy to get to and so would need the whole day off.

"Can i have tomorrow off, i know it's short notice but my knob is all green and red and i need to go to the GUM clinic".

Job done!

It would look obvious though and I'm not one for ringing in sick even though I want the job I have an interview for :(

if you think you've got a good chance of getting the new job and don't like you're current one then phone in sick - who cares if its obvious tbh...

otherwise take it as a lesson to learn for next time

Depends what the job is. I'd phone in sick and attend an interview for a job I really wanted, even if it was the day after.
