Job Interview

I have a job interview later this week but I am slightly concerned about a few things.

1. The duties of the role are slightly above what I can do now and I am a bit worried about this. I am quite logical minded and believe I can adapt but still concerns me a bit.

2. Probation period! What if I don't pass? What if the manager doesn't like me?

I am sure these things are natural but I just want some advice!

Thanks

1. They wouldn't have offered you an Interview if they didn't think you were capable of doing the role. They will train you on the areas you need help with.

2. That's a fear that all new starters have (I'm starting a new job in 5 weeks!). Just keep your head down and crack on with the job at hand and you'll be fine.

1. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone for the advancement of your career.
2. All people go through that ( I did, when I moved from sales to be a junior web developer).

1. I always look at an interview as their ability to assess if you are capable of being trained for the role. Nearly every new job requires training, so it isn't about you being able to walk in and do it right away but your ability to learn and adapt to it.

2. No point getting worried about this, as above just knuckle down do the best you can and most of the time there won't be a problem.

if you dont push yourself to do things your not comfortable with you will never improve look at it optimistically you'll be learning new skills

as for probation that's usually a given, unless you are absolutely useless (unlikely or they wouldn't offer an interview) if the manager dont like you meh such is life.

and good luck

Top interview tips:
1. Most important thing is to make sure you are offered the job
2. Never say anything negative about yourself unless specifically asked for negatives (there are correct answers to that, too)
3. If you are asked if you can do something, always say "yes".

You can turn the job down after being offered if you decide you can't do it. Most stuff you can learn as you go, though.

Any more information about what you do and what the job is?

Don't be worried, but do prepare to be asked about why you think you're suitable for the role. What aspects of your skills and experience have prepared you to take on the new responsibilities?

2. Probation period! What if I don't pass? What if the manager doesn't like me?

Don't worry unduly about this. The new employer will guide you through what they expect of you when you start; and once you're through the interview process they will have a good idea of how much they can ask of you in that time.

I'd disagree with that one, its fine to say that you don't know, or can't do somethings (not too many mind!) as long as you can come up with either your approach to learning them or how you have transferable skills that are relevant.

You don't go up ranks by only doing what you're comfortable with, unless you're useless you should be fine going up in the world.

And number 2? Who cares, if you don't you don't, you'll be in the exact same position you are now. My advice? Don't be lazy or useless, then you won't fail.

A lot of it is luck, I find you either have chemistry with an interview panel or you don't. It's a question of organizational culture - often if you don't feel even remotely comfortable with a panel then you won't enjoy the job anyway. People vary a lot man, as much as it would be nice for the most skilled person and most capable person to get it, sometimes it's the person they liked more.

Yeah, don't take it too literally. If it's a task that you can relate to something else that you do know about, then admitting lack of knowledge is ok - though you should aim to demonstrate though your relating it to a skill that.... yes you can do it :)

But the answer to whether you can do something should never be "no"

Ok. First world problem guys.

Offered the job but have been low balled as they feel I am not as skilled as they'd like.

They have said they are willing to develop me into said role and think I would be a good fit.

I have also been offered an extension in my current contract for 6 months. They have said they would like to take me on perm but the guys above have not approved this yet. I have also been told that next year I will be doing boring donkey work and i know i will be bored.

New job will utilise and develop my skills a lot more.

I am 50/50 as I will be looking at over 10k pay drop.

I am 25. No kids. Rented house with my partner at uni

Worth noting: I have advised I dont feel I am that far from said role so would like to meet somewhere in the middle

Exactly this. My boss was thankful that I admitted not to knowing how to do something as it gave him an idea of where I was and where I needed to work on instead of just being able to do everything and not knowing how best to advance my career.
