Mornining gents,

I hope you've all had your morning tea/coffee/pasty etc.. as i need some advice that could affect the world and you in many ways.

Let me give you some background information so you understand the full story...

Once upon a time, i worked in London. The job was great, it didn't stress me out and i knew everyone there and my team of 15 where a great bunch and i enjoyed working with them! There were rainbows, faires, unicorns and all was good in the world BUT 2 months in to this job, the evil time caught up with me and the 2 hour train journey in to work / out of work was starting to have an affect on me. The rainbows, faires, unicorns all left and i was alone in a dark place.

I started getting grumpy and tired when at home and this started to affect my relationship with my girlfriend and i was too tired to see friends so i ended up never seeing them for 6 months.

I decided that it was time for me to leave and found myself a job at a charity based down south only 20 miles away from where i live! I was happy as could be and so was my girlfriend. So i left my old workplace and it was very upsetting but i felt it was needed.

Soon, my first day had arrived got up at 8am with a smile on my face. I drove to my new workplace and met my new boss. He seemed a nice guy and we got on very well. Then i met my new team, which only had 2 people in it but they are very nice guys. After leaving that day, i felt unhappy and i had a horrible feeling that this place wasn't for me. Fast forward to today and that feeling is still there. I can't stand it here. The manager is a complete idiot who has broken 2 systems over the past 2 weeks. He deleted a group because he didn't know what it was and then no one could log on to the computers and then he moved some mailboxes some strange way and now the 8 most important people in the company can't send emails!

Then, a ray of light appeared out of the sky... my old workplace wants me back. They've missed me and they said that wanted the rainbows, faires and unicorns back. I'm tempted to go back but i'll go back to long days with 4 hours travel each day, but i go back to a workplace where i was happy and enjoyed my job.

So, it's a simple question of... should i stay or should i go?

Only you know really.

Depends if you can come to terms with having to do the 2 hour train journey, or 2 months after doing it again you will want to leave.

Sleep on the train, lots of people here do 2 hours each way. Get a job closer to you if you don't like it nobody's holding a gun to your head.

Move house or new job closer.

Entertain the idea of moving closer?

Can't afford it at the moment. My job doesn't pay that well ;)

Well that's what i'm worried about. I can go back and then 2 months down the line started feeling the same way again.

The danger is that you go back and the rainbow disappears again plus all of that travel again. Can’t you stick it out and see whether it gets better? When not try and do something to make it better, sounds as if you’re just giving up?

the travel will become a pain again, quickly.
try and make things better i your current job or:

- move closer to other place
- get another job close to home.

Agree with simulatorman, I'd stay where you are and start with a talk on why you shouldn't mess with the IT system because you think you know better...

as long as the people are nice what does it matter if they screw up the systems?

I love a disaster, the bigger the better....

if our server room exploded i would be in heaven....

the only issue being we have no DR plan or equipment and all hte build documents are in the server room... as well as the fact we cannot restore the server os with any of our very expensive backup solutions...

Wouldn't the savings on rail fairs cover the rent hike? You could move somewhere like Haywards Heath or Three Bridges which would greatly reduce the commute to London, hell even Shoreham-by-Sea would knock a fair bit off the commute time and is still a cheap place to live? Or are you living with parents currently?

I do two hours each way into london, its great, in the morning i have beckfast on the train and then then 1 and 1/2 hours sleep and on the way home i read, catch up on TV shows, all the sort of things i want to do to relax, its nice :-)

I've suggested they make numerous changes but the IT budget is tiny. It took 2 weeks for us to get permission to buy a £200 PC!

I've implemented some changes already in regards to new user requests and using WOL for WSUS but it's not enough.
