Job Problem

wait wait wait WAIT...

You cannot afford to move closer but you can afford the commuting costs ? surely the commuting costs are just as high.

I live in Milton Keynes and I commute to London every day also. (for the time being) and my travel card costs 105 quid a week plus 14 quid a week for car parking. (luckly work pay for it so :p ) I mean stack that up a month (4 weeks) 416quid for train cards and 56quid for car parking. Thats not even including petrol costs to and from the train station

Of course this is my situation but 466quid a month (not including petrol) just on commuting is mental. I would never pay it myself personally.

They offer a season ticket loan at 0% intrest. They also pay half of the season ticket so i end up paying £90 a month to get to London and back.

As people have said, moving closer would be the best idea. But the problem is London is pretty expensive to live, especially if you are trying to move near the centre of London.

I have to get 2 buses to University every day at 5:30 in the morning to be in for 9, takes about 2 hours to get to and from University every day, which is much like your situation (4 hour round trip).

Different people handle the situation differently but I tend to be normal, I usually fall asleep on the bus so sleep derivation isn't a problem.

How long did you work at your "Fairies & Unicorn" workplace, I felt the same during the first 1-2 months at University but soon got over it (Now in my second year).

Anyway, have you tried different routes? There could be a quicker route that might be less stressful/tiring. Also I find reading a book while travelling makes time fly, which helps.

Hope that helps...some O_o

Mornining gents,

I started getting grumpy and tired when at home and this started to affect my relationship with my girlfriend and i was too tired to see friends so i ended up never seeing them for 6 months.

So, it's a simple question of... should i stay or should i go?

Wow, I feel your pain, I know what long commutes can do especially into London. I also know the toll of the higher pressure job and equally the rewards and buzz that comes from being successful at it.

There are lots of opportunities with the third sector and something else may come up locally.

Choose Love. Even if it doesn't work out with this GF there will be others and you won't what to look back in 20 years and realise that you missed out on the more important things in life for the sake of a career.

There is no way on earth I would entertain the idea of a 2 hour commute to work.

If you get the early train (5:30 ish) then it isn't so bad and you start to blank it out or sleep. You adapt to the commute pretty quickly as well. The problem is the toll on the rest of your life.

Also, everyone on the train is always so serious with their Blackberries and IBM think Pads. I used to like to whop out the PSP or some gaming on the lappy to pass the time lol.

OP - what's your gut feel? What do you want to do?

Pro-tip : do that.

My gut isn't telling me anything. It's like it's stepped back and said "I'm not getting involved".

If you stay there will be trouble, if you go there will be double.
But enough allusions to song lyrics.
If it is a promotion go back, if it isnt doesnt matter what you will say others will think that you have returned with your tail between your legs, even if its a paper promotion. If you do go back move closer simple as.

I currently have a 5 hour commute, 2.5 each way. But, it's not my permanent job. Sleep on the way up, paper, some TV episodes and Angry Birds on the way home. It really has very little effect socially at the mo but if I had a family I can see that it would be near on possible to spend time with kids.

So a win all round then!

Very true. Too many people I have worked with use the commute / work to get away from their family.

Worst one is where both partners have long commutes + senior roles so never see each other or the kids, who go to child minders, then wonder why the family suffers after a few years of only spending a couple of hours together each week.
