Job searching while employed

Of course, I was merely replying to the emphasis on it being short notice :)

True :)

Though to be fair an employer is more likely to refuse things on short notice 'just because' (even if legally correct) and I was more agreeing with zola that the reason given is more likely to swing it!

yup, I wouldn't risk booking a day off - just go with the doctors appointment excuse and disappear for a couple of hours.

That's a bit harsh, this has been my experience so although you may disagree, it is most certainly not a lie.

I guess it depends on your relationship with your manager. If I asked for tomorrow off and said it's because I want to sit on my behind all day, I'd expect that to be viewed differently to my wife has a hospital appointment and I'd like to attend with her.

I wasn't stating that what you said was a lie, I was stating that should that situation arise rather than tell them you're going to an interview you make up something to cover yourself and ensure the time is given.

My apologies, I see now that it can also be meant that way :)

Disappearing for a couple of hours isn't always feasible if a lot of travel time to the interview is required (i.e. location is a long way from the workplace). For example my current employer is about 2.5hrs away from my previous one so even a 4pm interview would basically mean leaving at lunch time.

As for the original question I wouldn't tell the boss.... book time off if you think it is likely to be accepted, you can always tell a white lie about what you are going to get up to (may even be the truth, e.g. you need to do xyz in addition to attending the interview).
