Would you:

1) Would for a smallist Microsoft partner doing a variety of server, desktop and networking tasks

2) Work for a huge national company working in 3rd line Windows server environment for more money? We only look after the server O/S and the company runs some crude called lotus notes :(

Been basically asked if I want to go back to my old employer and the extra money is missed.

absoulutely not and they'd have to raise by a lot.

Only been at the company for about 2 months :(

Ah, that's a shame. :(

Well, were I in your position I'd ask if I need to be in a job I enjoy more or if I really need the money more. But I think this goes without saying and you've probably asked yourself this a lot already.

i certainly have. If you include callout etc. we could be talking £8k+ difference.

I'm also thinking of a potential recession hitting etc. and surviving better at an energy company

So number 2 is an energy company? There's no real signal of them ceasing and desisting anytime soon. Plus if there's more money, then yes, undoubtedly.

It's all about the dough bro. Go for the cash!

Also, a larger company generally looks better on the CV.

Only if you're motivated by money or in need of more.

Myself, i would go for the smaller company option, as i feel it would be more rewarding that working for a large scale company.

But for all i know the small company could be hell on earth!

I would work for the bigger company everytime. As you said if a recesion does hit then, hopefully, they have the resources to keep you in a job.

I worked for a smaller company before and they've been hopeless. I would never work for one again if I had the choice.

I agree about the large company on the CV etc.

In times of rising costs I'm very tempted just to take the money etc etc.

I'm thinking of heading back to SSE and just praying that they move to Exchange in the not too distant future.

You'll (in my experience as a Software Engineer) get far better experience at a small company, due to having to fill more roles. However, job security would be something I'd look for in the current financial climate, so #2 might be a better bet.

I'd probably go for #2, more money, job security and more chances to progress within the company would sway it for me.

I feel your Lotus Notes pain. My company is probably going to be dumping it in 6 months after 10 years of complaints for end users. It's seriously the worst piece of software I've ever used.

I'd probably take the first job unless the difference in wages is huge. It sounds more interesting and you'll get more responsibility.
