Im 16 years old and I have just started Collage, I hope to work with computers in the future, but the thing is I want to work indepth with computers, fixing hardware and things, but I got an E in my mathematics and so I cannot take a computing course or an ICT course. Is there anyway I will be able to get into a job posititon eventually such as Computer Consultant?

Anything is possible. You don't need the maths.

Just finish college and see how it goes. Maybe get a computer job, maybe go to university. You're young, the world is your oyster.

You can try getting work with a local university as a junior technician (usually 3 years as a "junior" then full technical post) if you want to "work with computers". The pay usually isn't great but usually comes with decent benefits like day release for college.

Failing that you can go the NC/HNC/HND college route then apply to your local university and along the way do some Maths modules. That's the way I did it though in the end I got fed up with education and left after Adv. Diploma in Software Engineering for a technician post. I'm now involved with Windows/Linux desktop support and now moving into video conferencing.

Once you get a couple of years experience you can consider moving on if you don't like it.

thanks for the advice, I am hoping to do a HND at university in computer hardware and software.

Hi Mate,

I got a job with only 1 gcse. Did all the running around fo a small it department, nothing diffiicult but i got on with things and worked hard. After a year i was going to leave but i got trained up for MCSE (not quite done) CCNA and i have done a HNC (2 years through part time degree).

Get a job if it's really what you want to do. Know people who went straight into a job and they're loving it :)

**** outta luck then :p

Was their really any need to swear?

That's the most pointless post i have ever come across.

Richard Beer, you can always retake a GCSE Maths whilst doing a course at college. I know at my college, you can certainly do that. :)

fixing computers isn't that indepth, that's pretty basic stuff.

if you're serious about consultancy i'd go for getting that C in your maths while you're at college, because i doubt there's a IT/computer consultancy in the land that's gonna take you on with an E in maths; that's pretty much a "can you add up" grade. don't mean to be harsh but i'm not going to give you false hope, a C in maths at gcse is necessary in almost all professional employment.

before people go barrating me and saying "i've got no qualifica... blah blah... and i've done... blah blah blaaaahhhh" i'm sure you have, well done! but you are the exeptions to the rule on the whole.

Maths and English at Grade 'C' GCSE seems to be a requirement for almost any job... make sure you have them.
