John Barnes - One rule for them, another for us?

How much is a chauffeur?

The non insurance wasn't intentional, it was a mistake. I'm sure he will now rectify this, hardly crime of the centaury.

Nobody is saying it's the crime of the century, however why should he be let off (despite already having 9 points on his licence) because he 'forgot' to insure it?

Would you or I be let off for forgetting to insure our vehicles?

Yes, we would. He's not been 'let off' he's just not been banned. Just like Mr Moron Sales Rep can drive at 120mph down the M1, get caught, and escape a ban becuase he 'needs his license for his job'

It's a crap rule and one i've hated for years but there is no special treatment here.

Then it's special treatment for the sales rep too, obviously.

We would be judged on individual circumstances, magistrates will be lenient if it was a genuine mistake and you need you car for your job, not to just to commute. He wasn't speeding and it would appear that this was the first offense for no insurance. He pays a fine, court costs, apologises and then insures his car and carries on with his job, family life and charity work.

If Gavin form the rough part of town was driving on the M6 in a Cavalier with no insurance, no record of it being insured by him and him needing the car to get to and from Tesco's then he wouldn't be show the same leniency. That's why all bans go through the courts so a person can decide if it's appropriate for a ban or not.

It's not 'special treatment', the same treatment is applied to every motorist for whom a driving ban would bring 'exceptional hardship'.

I dont agree with it but it isnt special treatment.

If you are a millionaire then you can afford any claims that may come your way. Can you imagine bill gates for example being arrested for not having insurance, laughable.

*face palm*

You can drive without insurance, but you have to deposit a considerable sum to the Treasury, you can't rely on good will with things like this.
