Hi
i purchased an lg pk990 50" plasma from john lewis 3 years ago it was £1100, it developed a 1 mm thick vertical green line last week and john lewis wrote it off and offered me a panasonic tx-p50st30 as a direct replacement.

What do you think?is the panasonic decent?
its only £580, i suppose its normal that your offered a tv a nearly half the price i paid?

It's a much better TV that the one you originally had, which probably had an rrp much higher than £580 a year ago.

Enjoy the new screen!

don't do it, pay the extra and get the 50GT50B it's £799, so an extra £200 will get you an amazing set, also if you buy an upgraded set you get a brand new 5 year warranty.

if you take the st30, you will only get 1 or 2 year warranty iirc.

the GT50 is newer and a model higher, so it will be vastly superior to the ST30, it's in fact the best tv you can buy this side of £1,000.

just ask them if you can upgrade to the GT50, they should say it is fine, others have managed it in the past no problems, if they say no try another operator (phone them back).

Is John Lewis' 5yr warranty automatic? Do I need to register the TV or anything or is it simply based on 5 years from my date of purchase on my confirmation email?

it's automatic but only new tv's apply.

therefore if you get a replacement tv, they do not see it as a new tv. but if you say you want to upgrade your replacement they see this as a new tv purchase.

imo everyone should be buying from john lewis because of 3 reasons.

1. they price match (which means you get the best possible price)
2. free 5 year gaurantee
3. well known high street retailer with brilliant customer service and have a great track record.

Gotta love these GT50s. They're a much better set than the ST50 (I sent my ST50 back), which is in turn much better than the ST30. Well worth the extra dosh, especially if that means they treat it as a new TV.

i think most people would pay the extra £200 knowing they are getting a new free 5 year warranty included, peace of mind and all, especially with his current tv dying on him.

Thanks for the replies

Think i'm going to pay the extra and get the 50GT50B:)

update:

got the P50GT50B at no extra cost
john lewis are pretty special tbh:)

no way, you literally robbed them.

i take it you owe me a pint :p

did you get another 5 year warranty? or will it only be 1-2 years? because afaik it wont be treated as a new purchase if its a direct replacement.

not to say it is going to break mate, but some people have had issues with theirs, although mine from JL is perfect afaik.

i would enquire about the warranty if you didn't.

like i said above, anybody who chooses another retailer is insane, JL are head and shoulders above everyone else imo.

You might be able to wangle a 5 year warranty directly from Panasonic. Now that they're not giving away 3d specs, their current offer is a 5 year warranty on specific models. You'd need some kinda receipt though.

doubt they would do that mate, would have to be bought from their official stores.

No 5 year warranty unfortunately but they told me i have 2 1/2 years warranty left,no doubt i will be begging my mrs to let me buy an oled by then: )

i thought as much, oled is a long way from being affordable, well for a comparable panel as the GT50 anyway.

i will be keeping my GT50 for 5-10 years minimum, I don't see the point in upgrading for the sake of it, I prefer their have been huge leaps and bounds made. My GT50 has lots over my PZ85B

e.g.

HD Tuners
PVR function
Internet and Smart functions and Apps
3D
Uses less than half the electricity
Better PQ
Bigger Screen Size

no point in upgrading to an OLED if it isn't really an upgrade, it would be like going from a Nexus 4 to a Galaxy S3, a sidestep at best.

i will upgrade when 4K is mainstream and a 4K oled is less than £1K for a year old top of the range 60" panel.

Has the gt50 dual tuners?
I thought it had non twinned sinle freeviewnhd andmsingle freesat hd?
That is something which they have thought of on this years models. Samsung have such an odd range this year, a complete glut of models with so similar numbering it takes time to figure the diffence between models, and see which are new and which are slight rebranding efforts of last years bunch.

Some of their new models have proper pvr functionality. My 6800 has reasoanble abilities through the freesat tuners due to large overlaps in channel provision, but many of this years models with the true dual tuners actually are capable pvrs, as you can properly watch any channel and record another, whilst streaming either to a compatible tablet or phone device.

Its the additional features and smart functionality which will become more and more user friendly over the next couple of years, and will prove quite useful in time I think. Some of their models seem to have got that right. Just such a wack in the range, you need a fine comb to pick the best parts.

As for the OP, you did well getting that gt50 as a replacement, its a lovely box.
