I am really thinking of joining the Army doing somthing engineering related e.g. aircraft engineer seems like a good option to me, anyone here have experience of what its like and how the application process works?

Thanks!

Best thing would be get down to your local AFCO(Armed forces careers office) and have a chat to them about it, the will be more suited to answering your questions.

Basically the application process goes like this(Very Basic terms of course)
Chat at local AFCO > Application Papers filled out > BARB test and Basic English and Maths test > Interview > Internal Admin stuff(You won't know anything about it) > 2 day Selection course(will probably include TST(Technical Selection Test) Seen as you're looking at an engineering job > 2nd Interview & confirmation of job choices > Star Basic training.

If you've got anything more specific, just ask, I know there are a few people here in the army, and I myself have been in once, and I'm just currently waiting to rejoin.

Oh, and don't join the RAF, Army is much better :p.

There is 2 jobs basically the same but you need a fair bit more qualifications for the RAF than to work as the same thing but in the Navy, strange but i am going to take your advice and pop down their tomorrow and get some information.

if you want to be an engineer and work with aircraft then you could do that in the army, navy or air force...

I'd probably choose the RAF though as AFAIK the conditions are generally better and you're not going to get ****** around as much

also 4 month tours vs 6 month tours vs being stuck on a ship - which would you rather do?

The only trouble with aircraft engineering in the forces now is it's not a good starting point anymore to get a decent job when you come out. The aircraft types and work see's you right back to the starting point when you leave the forces.

It's certainly not unusual for ex forces guys that have joined places I've worked to be put on semi skilled money as an adult trainee when leaving the forces.

Plus most of the work for the RAF is contracted out to civilian outfits and it's only going to get worse. So unless your at war you end up doing small repairs and tyre pressures, daily servicing type stuff. I've been on a few RAF bases and I'd have blown my own brains out of that was the kinda engineering I had to do.

If I had to choose one I'd go the navy route because atleast guys I know that have come from there have had the time of their lives and seen most of the world. The late 20 somethings I know that are ex RAF and left have seen Germany and Cyprus.

You mist out the Medical after the barb, And also there is no Maths and English as far as im aware! the barb is just a test to see how quick you are at learning and how expandable you will be, no english or math in it though, its all shapes and sizes.

Oh yeah medical form, forgot about that :p lol.

But the Basic English and Math tests were there when I sat my BARB this time round(around 6 months ago). Just to note, it is completely separate from the barb, and isn't a pass/fail test, it was just to see how good I was at basic maths and English grading you from either A-C GCSE, D-F GCSE or SAT level. It was all computer based, all pretty easy, sub/on-par with GCSE level. It's a shame that most 18 year olds joining only have the reading level of a 11 year old.

i did mine about 10 months ago and i didnt have one, unless its AFTER the medical, as i still havnt got that far :(

Hmm, dunno then. Mine was just in the same seating as my BARB, I did it right after. Who knows lol. I dunno if it would be after the medical though. What trade did you apply for out of interest?

I'm still waiting on a form from APC Glasgow giving me authorization to rejoin, being a pain in the arse lol. Once that is done though, they will release my original service medical documents, and I can continue my application woo.
