Jonah lomu dies aged 40

I'm not a rugby fan in any way - however I have watched this guy and viewed with interest his story.
We share something in common - kidney failure. I too had nephratic syndrome (kidneys leak protein) which led to kidney failure and eventually to a kidney transplant.
So I know exactly what this guy was been through.
He has died incredibly young - in theory you can live to the same age on dialysis as anyone else can, but there are always the potential for complications.
He actually helped bring kidney disease into the public eye a little - to be blunt kidneys are not a fashionable disease and so don't get publicity.

Of course I will take this opportunity again to remind people that if you haven't already done so, please go and register on the organ donation website.

I also have Nephrotic Syndrome, although perhaps not the same type, as not all will lead to permanent damage with dialysis and transplant.

It was sad to hear the news on Jonah though, as you say, it did help make it more known about.

The first truly modern player and defined a transition in the game.

I was lucky enough to meat him on quite a few occasions and he was one of the most humble self effacing people I ever met (until you got him onto the subject of pimped car audio ;):))

Thanks Jonah for being one of my inspirations and R.I.P. :(

This is a family forum.

I've spent far too long this morning reading all the tributes from current and ex-pros on twitter. Everyone thinks of him as the ultimate rugby legend.

Shouldn't be talking about people self-effacing in earshot of kids. What you do in your own time is up to you, but there's a time and a place....

Legend gets thrown around far too often for sports people but he was the definition of one.

A true beast and a gentleman, he was the ultimate male in his day. Seeing grown 16/17st blokes bounce off him like they were children was incredible.

RIP to the big man. He will never be forgot in the sport that's for sure.

So sad. I always hated rugby with a passion, but if this guy was playing I always tried to catch the game. He was IMMENSE. I always wondered what would happen if he went into American Football.....I think he would have been unstoppable :)

RIP

It really does make you wonder - life is short!

At least he left his mark in the history books, he'll never be forgotten.

Obviously I'd heard of him and knew that he was very highly thought of but hadn't really seen much of him. That video of people bouncing off him  what a beast  pretty agile too for a big guy.

RIP big man!

I always wondered what would happen if he went into American Football.....I think he would have been unstoppable :)

That's exactly what I was thinking when watching the YT video.

News sucks. Was interesting just how much he was discussed during the world cup as basically being the standard against which all players in the modern game are judged. Think that says it all about him really.
