Jose`s last season with Chelsea?

I was, but we're talking about the modern game and a different cup competition. As well as the fact that I was pointing out domestic dominance doesn't equal European glory.

Except he's already won it...

Not with a side of superstars that he`s parachuted in though. He hasn`t shown the ability to turn a Globetrotters team into champions - which is a task in itself. Scolari on the other hand...

Champions? Yes he has, two years on the trot :) He's hardly underachieving.

He won the Euro Cup with a side worth less than a tenth of the side he currently has. Don't really see your point there.

He's obviously shown he has the capability to win it.

true true true :)

except the bit about sheva being a flop in the premiership.... he is going to own

well in truth the only competition in that stakes he has is henry
ruud looks to be on his way out and after these 2 there was bent with 18 goals.... :D

On a serious note I personally do not think he will be such an impact in the premiership as ppl think....coming from Milan Vs Juve to Wigan Vs Chelsea on a windy, rainy, cold JJB stadium in the middle of December.....hes in to win them the Euro Cup they will prob win the premiership with or without his help.

That`s not the point. Benitez could do it on the cheap, Wenger nearly did. Its a different challenge when you have a team of superstars - look at Real Madrid. Has he got the ability to make them work together and motivate them enough for the win? Porto essentially had an underdog mentality, which is easier to work with.

Benitez inherited the nucleus of a good side and with a couple of additions made them into a good team. Yes, he had a big impact as a manager but look at the amount of quality players there when he arrived.

Seems beside the point though. Liverpool weren`t a team of superstars. I think that it will take a different manager for Chelsea to win the CL.

I think it'll just take time. Next 2 or 3 years and they'll win it. They need to have a few cracks at it as freak occurences can happen in cup competitions.

Liverpool have one superstar, and he won them the cup. He'd have done that under any manager.

He will get bored and want a bigger challenge, somewhere back in Spain may be on the cards. The CL is his main goal. I can see him leaving in the next two seasons whether he wins it or not.

White shirt make good white flags too. Useful in a ruck, etc. ;)

Its a old debate, why Gerrard generally struggles for England. Its not a quality issue, most premiership players would get into an international side somewhere. It may have been playing too deep, but seems more likely that he thrives on the responsibility and connection with the fans at Liverpool. It probably wouldn`t be the same for any other club.

On a side note, do you think that this applies to other players as well? Do most players perform better for their club than country - the sense of loyalty is greater, and they feel more responsibility to perform? I cant think of many players in the current national squad who seem to turn it up a notch for England (nor kiss the Lions when they score)? Are they just playing for another level of personal success, rather than sheer desire to represent their country?

I suppose it depends what drives a player to excel. If its their love for their club and they're a big fish in a little pond (which, to be fair, is what gerrard is - though it sound stupid referring to Liverpool as a little pond) then you would expect them to perform at a higher level for their club than elsewhere.

I think Gerrard's biggest problem at International level is Lampard. There's no way either can be dropped, they're both too good, but they don't work well together in a 4-4-2. its why I've been calling for Carrick to play behind them.

I was trying to name England players who have played better for their country than their club the other day.

I could only come up with Darius Vassell.

I'm amazed at some of the comments on here in all honesty. Even as someone who doesn't support Chelsea it seems pretty obvious to me that:

a) Abramovich isn't going anywhere, and won't be getting "bored" of Chelsea any time soon.

b) Roman is also highly unlikely to get thrown in jail like some of the other oligarchs. If anyone read up on the situation over there in Russia you'd realise that pretty quickly.

c) RA has also exercised no control whatsoever in relation to the team so far, and shows no signs of wanting to do so either. All he wants is to turn a profit with the club after a few years, and that certainly doesn't require winning the Prem every season, let alone the CL constantly, or anything silly.

d) Given that RA is staying out the football side, that's left Mourinho and Kenyon to sort out all the signings between them, and there don't seem to have been disputes between them, so you'd have to assume there's no problem backstage. So I don't see why anyone at the club with power would be opposed to Mourinho, given how well he's done so far.

The only reason I could see Mourinho leaving Chelsea anytime soon is of his own volition. Personally I think he'll only get "bored" of managing there after he's managed to win the CL for them. As long as he's got a challenge there I think he'll have something to really concentrate him.

So really, for all this harping on about how unfair it is that Chelsea have billions and our teams don't and how they should lose every game because of it, and nevermind they'll collapse soon and it'll all fall apart, I think we should just accept that that's quite frankly not the case, and Chelsea are going to be a big team for a fair few years to come, and we might as well just accept that and move on. Yeah they're loaded and we're not, but tough ****. :)

Personally i don’t mind Abrahimovich providing the Billions as he is a genuine guy who loves football. A football fan who only has one interest and that’s not a financial one like most others.

He is a bit of a swat when it comes to football too, tries to watch all the games from most of the leagues in his spare time. My kinda guy
